Depth 10 to 25; head 634 to 91⁄2, 3 to 3% in trunk; head and trunk equal or little shorter than tail. Eye 8 to 19, 2 to 22 in snout. Mouth cleft 17% to 34 in head, closes completely. Yellowish, densely covered with brown spots, variably fuse to larger irregular patches leaving only yellowish network from ground colour. Dorsal and anal with pale edges, latter broader. Mouth corner sometimes with black blotch. Gill openings always in dark or black blotch. Length to 1,500 mm,

Hong Kong (Singapore, East Indies). Gymnothorax dorsalis is based on 2 specimens 750 to 822 mm, which do not appear to differ materially, though described "the dorsal and anal fins posterior are distinctly margined with black.'

Depth 127% to 22; head 61⁄2 to 8, 2 to 24/5 in trunk; tail equals or longer than head and trunk. Eye 7 to 11 in head, 11⁄2 to 134 in snout, Mouth cleft 2 to 2% in head. Colour variable. Reddish brown with several irregular longitudinal rows of round black oval spots usually not larger than eye, smaller or absent from head, on tail often in transverse rows to form striped appearance. Dorsal and anal often with light border.

Spots sometimes partly confluent when fish yellowish, densely reticulated or marbled with brown. Sometimes spots still more dominant in ground colour which blackish, lighter on belly, with wide network of whitish or yellowish lines, which more numerous on head and form mottled appear- ance. Length to 1,500 mm.

Yellowish brown, with 3 or 4 longitudinal rows of dark liver brown spots, cach little larger than eye; spots extend on head and at least 2 rows on fins. Belly yellowish with hyacinthine mottling. Length not given. (Richardson). China.
