brought to my notice by Sir James Currie, a member of the

Colonial Office Education Advisory Committee, that Hongkong

University is not at present provided with a faculty of

science. This seems to me to be a serious handicap for a

University in the Far East at a time when the Chinese are

turning to the West for technical tuition and scientific

training.

I imagine that lack of funds has been the main reason

for the lack of such a faculty in the past. This, therefore,

seems to be a suitable moment for remedying this defect.

Should it prove practicable to spend some of this windfall

on the provision of this additional faculty, I think you will

agree that the University should benefit proportionately.

I, therefore, take this opportunity of passing on to

you Sir James Currie's observation with these remarks in the

hope that you may be able to secure favourable consideration

for the suggested expansion of the facilities offered by

the University.

Hugh Dalton.
