my last shot: I think it was about 7 p.m. I think mine was the

last shot fired inside, but more shots were fired later outside.

On night of 20th July B.543 was on patrol with me between 10 p.m.

and 4 a.m. His conduct and demeanour were quite normal. I can

give no reason why he should have done this. I had no suspicion

whatever beforehand. #

From

To Jury X X "Before the trouble I had heard nothing whatever

about the state of B.543's mind nor have I heard anything since

to explain. I have thought of no single thing that suggests a

motive. No-one can say what was in his mind. I never heard

B.543 complain of unjust treatment. I have known in the past

2 cases of Indians running amok like this. When B.553 fired

his first shots through the west window next the cook house, the

window was partly open. I could not see what he was firing åt.

I did not ask him anything. I could not sea from the next

window. I fired my first shot through the front verandah.

first to last I heard no shota whatever in the charge Room pasang

Shots could have been fired in the passage without waking me

after such a sleepless night. The alarm did not arouse me.

Once before it failed to do 80. At no time did I see B.722

discharge his revolver. When aroused I knew that the officer in

Charge was outside somewhere. I did not know or ask where his

wife was, No-one dared go upstairs in face of the Lewis Gun.

At no time between 5 & 7.30 did I leave the Station Building.

About 6 p.m. I got as far as the Charge Room verandah but saw

nothing."
