The duties of these surveyors, (Engineer,

Ship and Nautical include all those performed by

the Board of Trade Surveyors, which might be broad

ly summarised under the following heads:-

(1) Survey of the Hull, Boilers, and Machinery of

any vessel previous to the granting or a

Passenger Certificate.

(2) Measurement of Tonnage and Survey, previous

to Imperial and foreign registry.

(3) Surveys for loadline certificates.

(In the case of Hong Kong vessels these are

valid throughout the world).

(4) The inspection of lifesaving appliances.

(5) Ensuring compliance with the International

Collision Regulations.

(6) The survey of vessels (hulls, boilers and

machinery) whilst uncer construction and the

issuing in certain cases of certifying letters.

(7) Reporting on any casualty under the require-

ments of the Law.

(8) Any matter whatsoever affecting general sea-

worthiness and safety of life at sea, for all

vessels using this Port, both British and

foreign.

135 vessels were granted Passenger

Certificates last year on the authority of the

Surveyors' declarations, the ships ranging from the "Empress" class of 21,500 gross tons to coastal

and river steamers.

121 ships were granted Emigration
