The sugar trade, always
speculative, shows one serious bankruptcy; but in general few failures are reported and the native banks have had a good year in consequence, though some money dealers came to grief through gambling in Canton banknotes during the crisis of December, 1929. Dealers in iron and other metals including gold are
said to have done well.

The bridge at Shek Ha on the Canton-Kowloon Railway, which was damaged by bandits at the time of the attack on Canton in December, has since been repaired and through traffic was resumed on the 8th of January.
11. On the whole, but for the threat of a renewal of civil war in the Liang Kuang provinces, the situation would have seemed hopeful.
