My Lord,
The
In continuation of my secret despatch of the
11 th April, 1930, I have the honour to inform Your
Lordship that the political situation remains virtual ly
unchanged. There is a general air of expectancy and
uncertainty abroad. The attention of all parties is
engrossed by the Northern situation and its possible
developments. Chiang Kai-shek it would seem is
content to remain on the defensive confident of
ultimate disagreement between his opponents.
Anti-Government forces on their part have not as yet
taken any concerted action. Yen Hsi-shen is
attempting to form new and incompatible friendships. The veteran war-Lord Wu Pei-fu who, when last heard of,
was composing poems (one of which was published in the "Times" of the 20th November, 1928) and studying philosophy in a Buddhist monastery in Szechuan, has been
induced to emerge from retirement, while proposals have been submitted to Wong Ching-wai to proceed to
