Kuomintang. Two years later he quarrelled with Chiang

Kai-shek and retired to France. His sympathy with

Sovietism is said to have become modified in recent

years, and he is quoted as having stated that his disagreement is with Nanking's methods rather than its policy. But he has not the reputation of being

a strong character, and it is not unlikely he would

take colour from some of the extreme faction that still

follow in his train.

Meanwhile behind the backs of the various

militarists fighting for the control and fleecing

of the Chinese people another form of unrest hes

appeared among the peasantry. In large areas in

seven out of the eighteen provinces, revolt has been

declared against authority and war against prosperity.

Communism is so rampant in Hupeh that the Government is

in danger of losing the whole province. All the

North Western portion of Hunan is in the hands of

Communists and they have of late been particularly

active in the region of the Tung Ting Lake, where Cheng

Ling-chi and Yo chow have been attacked and occupied.

In Kiangsi half a million peasants are said to be
