of the carrying of contraband eargo on

British ships, I have the honour to

copy of a letter which I have received

from the Yangtaze Freventive Officers of

The Chinese Government Salt Revenue

Department drawing my attention to the

increasing illicit trade in Salt carried

on by the crews of British ships and

requesting that their office be given

facilities for searching for and seizing

such illicit salt as may be suspected of

being on board vessels flying the Briti sh

enai gn.
