31st January, 1928.
Dear Sir Robert,
The Secretary of State for the Colonies informs
me that your son Robert on the 2nd August made a declara-
tion at the Chinese Legation in London surrendering his
British nationality, and further, that he holds a commission
in the army of Marshal Chang Tso-lin. I have learned
this news with much surprise, and I should be glad to know
whether your son's action was taken with your consent, and
how he came to hold a commission from Marshal Chang.
Did you inform the Colonial Office, when your
son was admitted into the Royal Military Academy at
Woolwich, that he was an officer in the Chinese army?
And, if he was an officer in the Chinese army, how came
he to travel to England in May 1925 with a British
passport?
SIR ROBERT HO TUNG.
Yours sincerely,
(Sd) C. CLEMENTI.
Governor.
