(3) Communists. i.e. those now in Hankow.

Answering the question of the reporter as to the

military situation, Cheung said, "Being engaged in organising

a new Government in Nanking, we have suspended our war

activity on the Tientsin-Pukow Railway and North of the Yangtze Valley for some time, but we resume a general attack before long. Sun's troops are still in Yangchow

and Sun himself is in Wai On. His men have hinted at

surrender to us but we cannot accept it unless they declare officially that they will serve the principles expressed

in the 'Three Aspects of Democracy'. On the Tientsin- Pukow Railway our Nationalist troops have occupied Lam Wai Kwan. Our 5th Army under Ip Hoi Kam and our 37th Army under Chan Tiu Yuan are fighting on the Tientsin- Pukow Railway. Cheung Hak Yiu, the Shangtung General,

has surrendered to our Nationalist Government."

Cheung was again asked if General Pak was in Shanghai, and he replied, "He is now in Nanking and will remain

there for some more days. Pak is Chief of Staff to Generalissimo Tseung, and is also a member of the Administrative Council in Kiangsu." The reporter asked if there would be any further disturbance in Shanghai. In reply Cheung said, "Though May is approaching, nothing untoward is expected. We have 30,000 troops in Shanghai. The men of Chow Fung Ki are stationed in different places in Chapei and Wusung to afford protection with the assistance of the 26th Army. Besides these there is the Special Corps of 4,000 men on patrol duty in Fotung and the vicinity of Lung Wa is carefully guarded by 4,000

body-guards.
