Sub-head 12. Water Works $10,000. To provide for areas in course of development. In view of the need for retrenchment the amount has been reduced by $5,000 below the sum provided for 1927.
13 Port Works $5,000.--To provide for small port works. In view of the need for retrenchment the amount has been reduced by $5,000 below the sum provided for 1927.
11. Wong Nei Chong Development.
Site formation and road construction $1,000.In view of the need for retrenchinent the development of this area is now restricted to the low lying portions. The approach road and sites for houses for the Wong Nei Chong Villagers are provided for under this Vote and all further work on this scheme will be in abeyance.
15. Stubbs Road. Improvement to junction with Morrison Gap Road $10,000.— This work is to improve the line and level of the road at the junction of Stubbs and Morrison Gap Roads where there is at present a very dangerous corner. The work is in progress and is to be completed in 1928.
16 & 18. Approach Road and Nullah construction for site of proposed new Tung Wah Hospital at Soo Kun Poo $5,500 and $7,000.—The Tung Wah Hospital Committee has undertaken to build a branch Hospital at Soo Kun Poo on a site granted by the Government and has asked Government to form the approach Road and construct a nullah through the site. The scheme involves large expenditure by the Committee and should be of great benefit to the District. The Government considers the request of the Committee to be reasonable and the work must be undertaken next year to allow the scheme to proceed.
17. Reconstruction of Wong Nei Chong Nullak, Section No. 3 from Borrington Canal to Chinese Stand $75,000.-This is a portion of a scheme to enlarge the nullalt running from the Bowrington Canal to Wong Nei Chong on the south-west side of the Happy Valley, and should reduce the flooding that occurs there. The work is in progress and should be completed in 1928.
19. Reconstruction of Wong Nei Chong Nullah, Section 4 in front of Jockey Club Stand $130,000.--This is another section of the Wong Nei Chong Nullahı mentioned in Sub-head 17. It is to be commenced in 1928 and completed in 1929; it is necessary to proceed with this work as without it the work on the other sections would be largely wasted.
20. Reinstatement of Government Retaining Walls $28,000.-—The vote provides a sum for dealing with such Government retaining walls as may prove defective in 1928.
21. Rent allowance to Old Inhabitants Wong Nei Chong Village $2.200.—This provides for a rent allowance of six months to the Wong Nei Chong Villagers who have had to vacate their old houses before the new ones are ready for them.
22. Damage by rain storm of July 19th 1926 $9,000.--The sum provided is to meet the payment of retention money on the reconstruction of the branches of the Albany Nullah damaged by the rain storm of July 19th 1926.
This payment will complete the expenditure caused by the great storm.
23 Chinese Cemeteries. Laying out new areas $6,000.—This sum is to provide
for necessary grave spaces.
21. Revolver Range for Police at Tai Hang $20,000.—This is rendered neces- sary because the existing range is on the site granted to the Tung Walt Hospital Committee vide Sub-hend 18 and the Kennedy Road Range is not sufficiently large to accommodate the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps and the Police. It is proposed to make a covered range usable in all ordinary weather. To be completed in 1928.

is inadequate. To be completed in 1928.

26. Renewing electrical wiring to Government Buildings Queen's Gardens $9,250.--This work is required as the present wiring in the Queen's Gardens Houses is not in good condition. To be completed in 1928.
27. Eastern Filter Beds $25,000. This sum provides for the payment of retention
money only. The work will be completed in 1927.
28. Water Supply to Aplichau Island $1,000.-To provide a water supply to Aplichau Island. The work is in progress and will be completed in 1928.
29. Reconstruction and installation of No. 3 Motor at Bowen Road Filter Beds $20,000.-An economical method of raising water by hydraulic means to the higher levels which will reduce the amount of water to be pumped at the Pokfulam Road Pumping Station, which uses coal as fuel. To be completed
in 1928.

30. New Principal water mains in City $15,000. It is considered necessary to
lay another water main along Queen's Road from Arsenal Street to Garden Road to increase the water distribution in the Central district of the City, and to utilize the extra water that it is possible to filter by the new mechanical Filtration Plant installed recently at the Bowen Road Filter Beds. To be completed in 1928
31. Contribution by Government towards funds for Reclamation $325,000.-
To provide Government's share of forming the Reclamation based on the revised estiħate. There will be a further $20,000 to be paid in 1929 which should complete the Government's commitment on this work. The work is expected to be completed in 1929.
32. Morrison Hill Development. Roads, Retaining Walls and Drains $67,000. The work consists of the construction and surfacing of a road across the Morrison Hill Area, the erection of retaining walls thereon and in Queen's Road, opposite the Naval Hospital, and near Kennedy Road, improving the line and level of same and providing road drainage. The work is in progress and cannot economically be postponed. To be completed in 1929.
33. Construction of Nullah through Bourrington ('unal from south of Praya to Leighton Hill Road $120,000. This work is a continuation northwards of that mentioned under Sub-head 17. To be completed in 1928.
34. General Repairs to Blake Pier $1,000.—To provide for retention money.
The work will be completed in 1927.
35. Sailors and Soldiers Home, Arsenal Street $35,814.--Provides for the payment of the last two instalments in connection with the resumption of this property. The payment was to be spread over a period corresponding with the progress of building operations on the New Home. To be completed
in 1928.
36. Taking over Grab Dredger from Praya East Reclamation Work $22,000.- It is proposed to take over this Dredger from the Praya East Reclamation work as practically the whole of the dredging required for the reclamation will be completed by the end of the year 1927. The Government require this extra dredger to keep up with the necessary annual dredging work. To be completed in 1928.
37. Compensation and Resumptions $50,000.—This sum is to meet compensation
and resumptions during 1928.
38. To Kwa Wan Market (12 stalls) $1,000.—This sum provides for a small market at To Kwa Wan consisting of 12 stalls. No market exists in this district at present. Work in progress and to be completed in 1928.
