Telegram from the Governor of Hongkong

the

State for the Colonies. Dated 10th February.

My telegram of 4th February Trade Situation Canton Seamens Union has demanded the dismissal of Captain of British Flag

Chinese owned river steamer "Saion" for having taken disciplinary action against a native steward member of the Union. Crew of vessel which was at Canton refused to bring

the ship down. The only effective counter movement appeared to be complete stoppage of river sailings from Hongkong. To this British Company refused to agree and it would in any case be a very serious step. "Saion's" owners have therefore capitulated but have agreed to pay dismissed Captain aged 70 present wages for the remainder of his life for nominal

shore employment.

Business is only just reopening after the Chinese New Year piece goods clearances have been good.
