37737 RESE
(R£u: 28 JUL (3)
GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
HONGKONG. 11th June, 1923.
I have the honour to inform Your Grace that I have had under consideration the position of the Senior Overseers, Clerks of Works and similar officers in the Public Works Depert- ment.
The numbers of these senior posts for the subordinate staff have recently been increased in numbers but the relative increase in salary made in the general revision of salaries has not been commensurate with scales in other depart- ments. The former scale was £360 rising to £450 per annum by triennial increments of £30 and the present scale is £400 rising to £480 per annum by £20 annually. The higher salaries now paid to junior engineers afford grounds for the giving of better prospects to the very hard working and capable men who now end at £480 per annum, and I recommend therefore the creation of two posts of Senior Works Inspectors on salaries of £500 rising to £600 per anmam by annual increments of £10 to which will be promoted the best men in the ranks of the subordinate staff irrespective of the work in which they have specialised, mother it be as Roads Surveyor, Ulerke of Works, Drainage Inspector, Surveyors of Buildings, etc.
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
I have the honour to be,
My Lord Duke,
Your Grace's most obedient
humble servant,
7. E. Stabbs
Governor, &c.
THE DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE, K.G.,
