GOVERNMENT HOUSE. Res. 19

HONGKONG. 16th November, 1921.

With reference to your despatch No.208 of

the 21st July, 1921, enclosing translation of a note addressed by the Germen Ambassador to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, I have the honour to invite reference to paragraphe 5 and 6 of my Confidentiel despatch of 10th September, 1920, which explain the circumstances in which the buildings of the Berlin Foundling Home have been used. temporarily for married quarters for the police.

2. I would suggest that a reply should be sent to the note to the effect that it is the intention of this Government to safeguard the interests of the Missionary Union referred to: that the Government proposes to acquire the actual buildings of the Mission for their own purposes and that the proceeds of the sale will be applied to various missionary purposes in the Colony.

3.

An ordinance will shortly be passed in this Colony creating Trustees who will be empowered to deal with the property of ex-enemy missions in the Colony and with the carrying on of the work of such misgions.

I have the honour to be, sir.

Your most obedient humble servant,

78. Stätts

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

WINSTON CHURCHILL, M.P.,
