Director of Public Works.

A report is being prepared for your information on the recent water famine which will show that measures had to be taken to provide water for the population.

The fine grids referred to in (2) were fixed on the recommendation of the Sanitary Board to prevent Plague infected rats escaping from the drains. I fear the grids cannot be dispensed with.

No. 22. For the last few years the Government Pavilions which consist of two bungalows at the Peak reserved for the use of Heads and Assistant Heads of Departments during the summer months have been leased to the Peak Club.

They have now been restored to the Members of the Government Service for whose use they were built, and it was necessary to engage a Custodian to take care of the building as in the case of the Government Villas.

I enclose a statement showing how the expenditure on Public Works both recurrent and extraordinary stands at present.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient

Humble servant,

M.J. Gascoigne

Major-General,

Administering the Government.
