(Gov. 272/4 "All Unofficial members respectfully suggest Colonial Secretary, "appointment of may " considering local knowledge at present time is essential.
In Chater wishes it to be understood
P.S. Since writing the above it gives me pleasure to inform you that the Unofficial members of Legislation Council have written upon that this recommendation is quite spontaneous to submit their regard to the appointment of Colonial Secretary. I need hardly say that I am glad to find that the opinions of those whose interests are not with the Unofficial members, are entirely in accord and absolutely in the interests of the Colony that they decided to approach the subject.
In the views which I had already expressed in writing and which the Unofficial members of Council are so closely bound up with those of the Colony strongly in favour of the appointment of Colonial Secretary. I may add that before I had written all except the Postscript, I was asked by Hat descombe Smith, Acting ... to submit his name as a candidate for the appointment upon my own experience and observation. The Unofficial members have asked me to despatch the following telegram, the terms of which I did in my cypher telegram, which also contained the recommendation made to me by the Senior Unofficial member on behalf of all the Unofficial members with regard to his appointment, and which met with my entire approval:
"The Senior Unofficial member on behalf of all the Unofficial members..."
J.J. Gascoigne, Maj. Gen. Administering the Government.
