Dear Students,

Last week we started our "mock examination with the appearance of specimen Paper 1. I am aware of some sort of misunderstanding on the part of the students these days, I have to make it crystal clear that the notion of these Specimen Papers being "tips" or "hints" of whatever nature is entirely. crroneous, depending perhaps more on misconstrued expectations than on any impartial appreciation of the purpose of these, Specimen Papers. They are designed for revision purposes, and not. for providing short-cuts of any sort. SPECIMEN PAPER II

One hour and fifteen minutes Answer ALL questions.

PART 1 COMPREHENSION - PASSAGE AP

Read this passage and then answer questions I 10.

Although the tropics conjure up an image of luxurious vegetation

and colourful coral reefs, the blue waters of the tropical seas are generally deficient in nutrients and as a result underpopu lated. A dearth of plankton results in poor fisheries and comparatively few of the giant whalebone whales that feed on krill are found. Exceptions are the sea off the Caribbean Sea, the Galapagos Islands, and the Gulf of Aden, where the waters. teem with plankton, an abundance of fishes, schools of por- poises and dolphins, together with Sei Whales, Bryde's Whales and Sperm Whales, as well as migratory Blue Whales, Fin Whales and Humpbacks. These have to travel through thousands of kilometres of barren water from the polar seas, before reaching their tropical feeding grounds. While actually migrat ing, they find little food and, for at least four months of the year, their cavernous stomachs are almost empty. Yet, during this time, they may travel more than 6400 kilometres, some of them while pregnant or suckling their young.

The oldest report on the migration of Blue Whaley dates back to the last century, when whales caught at Nor wegian whaling stations were found to carry within their bodies the fragments of American bomb-lances. This indicates that Blue Whales migrating north along the American coast must cross the North Atlantic. In 1954, the stomach of a whale killed off New Zealand was found to contain a tin of tooth powder, inside which was a piece of paper on which was written the name and address of a member of the crew of the Willem Barendsz. It was found later that the tin had been thrown overboard, south of Madagascar, during the previous whaling

season.

The systematic marking of whales was not begun until about 1920, but it was only at least 10 years later that whales began to be marked regularly by means of tubular metal cylinders fired at close range (not more than 20 metres) from a specially modified harpoon gun. The giant whales show no signs of reacting to these attentions, which are probably no more than pin- pricks to them. From the recovery of such marks, when whales have been subsequently caught, it is now known that Blue Whales and Fin Whales migrate each winter to tropical regions rich in food, such as the north-west coast of Africa, the Gulf of Aden and Bay of Bengal, returning year after year in summer to the same areas of the Antarctic Ocean.:

Bombs have increased in power from the 20-ton chemical bombs of the early 1940's to the 20-thousand-ton atomic bombs of 1945 and on to the 20-million-ton hydrogen bombs after 1953. Today there are enough hydrogen bombs of the greatest destructive power (100 million tons) to wipe out all life on our planet. Will we make even larger bombs in the future? We can if we want: to, but even for the most over-whelming military purposes we do not need to.

We have already reached some sort. of limit. How much more dangerous can the situation get? At the present time, we are very near the verge of death. Every year or two, în some major inter- national crises → Korea, Suez, Berlin, Cuba, Vietnam probability of an

accident that could lead to a nuclear war. Dedicated men have worked hard and long in each of these situations to avoid a nuclear inci- dent, but we may not continue to be so lucky. Next time, it may be a nuclear terrorist or a maniac or a mistaken junior officer or just faulty equipment.highest standard of (25) Anything It is foolish of us to boost of the de crease in our death rate and the increase in the individual human life expectancy in the 20th century, as long as this. nuclear danger is so uncontrolled. This is the first time in the history of the human race that babies all babies everywhere have had such a small chance of living to an old age. We are indeed very near the limit in this danger. This situation, cannot continue. We cannot live very long walking on loose at the edge of a cliff. Either in 10, 20, or 30 years we fa over the nuclear cliff; or else very soon, before that time runs out, we arrive at an international under standing and move back from the danger.

Some people talk of yet another possibility: we might have a nuclear war with a few people surviving by going underground into shelters, and mines. But this, even if it could work, would only temporarily postpone the horrible problem. Do the survivors come out of the shelters and mines at last to bury, to clean up and to rebuild only to have their survivors go underground again after a revival of nuclear powers in an- other 20 years or so? And then again 20 years after that?

This is obviously not an alternative at all. It is nothing more than a refusal to face the necessity of finally agreeing on a foolproof method of international nuclear control. We must conclude that if we live and if we work to live, then we still have a chance to survive and to

keep from passing the point of no return. But time is fast running out. It is up to the men of today, in this present generation, within the very next few years, to permanently decide: will we, the human race, live or die?
