Dear Students;
We discuss Paper III today. Paper. It is designed to test the candidate's active control of the language, and no : MCQs will be set:
The following analysis is based on the paper sct in the 1982 HKCEE:
Question 1 is divided into two parts, (a) and (b). Part (a) requires the candidate to list a number of points. mentioned in the passage. The word. limit is important. For any point ex- ceeding the word limit (5. words in our case); no mark will be awarded even though the point given in the answer is correct
: Question 1(b) is a suitimary ques- ̇tion. The candidate is asked to describe
the theories put forward in the passage. to explain Greta and Freda's behaviour. The word limit again is very important." Anything beyond the first 90 words: will not be marked. In marking your summary, generally three basic criteria.

are used: content, organisation and ac- curacy. If you can get the “points”, your content score will be high. Howe ever, each of your points must be well communicated in order to get full marks for that particular point. Note that coherence is important in summary writing. Your summary should not be just a mixture of disjointed sentences: it should be a neat, coherent, though short, essay. Again, needless.to sayi your sumriary should be grammatically accurate, otherwise marks will be de- ducted for mistakes of this kind.

Question 3. as expected, is a doze passage. The passage this year is shorter. The blanks on the whole are well choseri Some are easy, e.g. blanks (4), (10), (11) and (19); but some require delj. beration, eg.blanks (5),(7), (13), (18), (21), (22) and (23). The passage is a little more difficult than that set, in last year's paper.
Question 4 is a matching and pair- ing question. This year the candidate is asked to pair up the logical answer with its question. It is a fairly easy task. Pro- vided you understand the question,
Question 2. consists of ten sub- questions, (a) to (j), designed to test the candidate's comprehension of the given, passage. First of all, note the sentence. For questions marked with an asterisk (*) complete sentences are required,
otherwise you will lose a lot of marks: quite unnecessarily:. There are several: things that you have to be careful with: Spell correctly and write grammatically accurate sentences or phrases. Note whether a sibquestion imposes a word limit; if so, stick to it. (For the 1982 | you'll have no problem finding out the paper, sub-questions (a), (c), (e) and (j) have word limits.) If you are asked to put down a sentence, a plirase or a word which occurs in the given passage as the answer, please transcribe carefully, be-. cause even the slightest spelling mistake will bring you a nought.

good chance. It is not very idiomatic to say something is considered as something something. Instead you should omit es, or you can use to be after considered.. That is, the sentence in (g) cant be written: as: I would consider. it a good chance.
This method doesn't work any more; does it?
Note that it's a tag: question.
My point is that we should quir now.
Incidentally, I could be the right choice if a colon was placed after is.
