Try to use the national approach "discuss some common ::mistakes amongst Chinese students. The term "notional approach may be new to some of you. By "notion" we refer to an abstraction such as "ability"; to put it simply, it expresses a certain idea” But why bothe to use this new. approach? The vason is not difficult to explain. The current trend of English language teaching is an emphasis on the communicative as proach. I presume tiat every secondary student in Hong Kong who learns Englis) as a foreign language does so because the or she wants to use English as anotter medium. to express himself or herself. in other words. to communicate. *...
It is this need to use English for. definite purposes and to convey specifie meanings through it that draws our attention to the communicative ap- proach of language teaching. And this has a bearing my choice of the notional approac 11 because one usually, if not always, has a notion or purpose
in mind during one's thinking process before-one.conveys one's message by whatever means one chooses.
An example to illustrate the above concept is helful here. If you want to invite a friend of yours, who happens. to be an Englishman, to dinner, you certainly want to express, in English, your Invitation. Here comes your notion: invitation. You may find it difficult to express this because you. dont know the proper way to invite. somebody in such a situation, or you altogether express it wrongly. This may not have any relation to your English results at school - you inay as well be: the top English student in the class. But the trouble is, you don't know how to express your invitation or you express it wrongly.
Thus, it
students often misinterpret.
It cannot be over-emphasized that prevention is better than cure (= No matter how strongly we emphasize this, the emphasis will never be excessive", ie. it is very important to note that ・prevention is better than cure.) You cannot be too careful.in.an examination (= Any degree of carefulness will not be undue in. an examination.).
ADVICE
1) Note the difference between the
two words advice and advise. Advice. is a noun while advise is a verb. 2)*I advised him that he consulted a

BLAME

Although the first sentence appears to be grammatically “correct", it is in fact not idiomatic. The second sentence, however, is idiomatic..

CAUSE and EFFECT

I make him do all the housework, The bare infinitive is used with make (to cause to act in a certain way)...

Make sure you understand the two ( sentences above.
CERTAINTY
!)*It is a true fact.

A fact is always true because there cannot be an untrue fact; hence the first sentence is redundant.. When you are certain that you will win in a competition, you'd say.

I am sure/cortgin to win because the later sentence should
be spoken by some other person
and not you yourself, ie, when 1 think that you will win the race, I'd
say
You are sure certain to win.
COMMANDS/ORDERS
1) *A soldier must obey order.
A soldier must obey orders... 2). The idea of command or order can be conveyed by the structure be to: You are to report to me after you have finished this task.
COMPARISONS
