Actually I had the idea in mind that 1. wouldn't take up this academic year's column. Why? Just because I will be very busy this year and may not be able to afford the time and energy needed to produce this column. But why then am I here? Well, my publishers kayde give une a host of reasons that F should and can carry on, Aud, above all, I discovered that

However I still can't afford the un energy devoted to this column if I work single: handedly. And thanks to my kind publishers, a partner was found. Miss LM. Wong and I will work jointly but write on different 'days'and bius, different things. Generally speaking, I am more concerned with the discussion part and she will be responsible mainly for the exercises.
Before | furk to today's formal discussion f haw. to make it crystal clear that great care.. will be given to preserve the continuity and miformity of this column, and that this joint effort will produce an equally good, if not. better, column compared to a single-handed undertaking.
Let's begin by discussing the English Language Paper I (Syllabus B) in the 1981 HKCEE、1wl discuss the remairing written papers its the following weeks:
The format of this composition paper. remains relatively inchanged: Part One requires a situational composition and Part Two a traditional essay. The number of choices is also the same as that in the last few years: Question Tin Part Orde is a comprilsory question while. candidates are required to answer one question out of four in Part Two.
Question 1 includes an illustrated 'map'of a holiday island. Mote the key phrases in the question: “first day of your holiday", "men- tingming TWO or THREE of the chinghhhoo strated"; "complete sentences: Therefore it would he foolish of you to talk about four or -five of the things illustrated,

thing which stems from your imagination and is cnot given in the map. Also, it would be illogical to say 'such thing as. "Yesterday we went to the cave and find a happy titive there.. Today we went to the remple, nearby. Why? Because it is your first, nor secund, not third, etc, day of your holiday. (Note also the directions.)
There are many things people can do on. the holiday island according to the map. One car walk along the Nature Trail, go to the temple, fish, swim, row, gò to the cave or have x barbecue. Besides, dolphins and junks can be.
Some candidates have complained that the map shown is too complicated and that they were at a loss as to what to write. Yes, the map shows many things. But mind you, you are only required to write on two or three of the things illustrated and you are not expected to mentico ' all the things there. So, if you just choose three, say going swimming, going fishing and visiting the temple, the other things shown in the map do not bother you any more.
Furthermore, notice that the map and its Hlustrations are not drawn to scale. In it, a ̇dolphin is shown to be bigger thai a junk, and an ordinary fish larger than a man. So, be logical and don't say that one can catch a fish

Question 2 is a topic for an argumentative essay. As I have mentioned time and again, you should answer each question in the topic. Hence: in this case, you have to say whether you agree or not.cxplicitly better than implicitly. In a sense this question is a tricky one. The statement does not meant a second airport be built to supplement Kai Tak, but one to replace Kai Tak. That is, the outcome will be a new airport without Kai Tak.
For this type of essay, reasons are im portant, Don't "make wild claims with no substantiation. Also note that at this moment, Kai Tak can cope quite well. The trouble with it is that planes taking off and touching down produc a nuisance to the ears of the residents' near the airport. Some may who say that. Kal Tak has little room for expansion to cope with increasing needs in the future. Kai Tak, How- ever, has a quick and convenient access to the city centre / So il:may well be that the decision, that is agree or not, lies in the result of the battle between Kal Tak's series and dermerits.
Question 3 is a very common topic, it consists of two parts: (a) how you made a new.. friend, and (h) how the friendship developed, I would say the second part is easier and requires less skill or logic. The first part, how- ever, needs to be logical, or belieyable. It seems案 unlikely that you can make a new friend without either party taking the initiative.
In this essay, a vivid and unexpected description nearly always, results in higher marks. The impression is important here. It

is not unreasonable to pressure, that 'many candidates will jump to this question, produce the same plot and hence bore the markers.- Thus, whenever you come across this type of essay, think of something new and original; the same old stuff wone do.

Question 4 is not purely topic. It consists of a part which requires some thinking on the part of the candidate. When you are planning, think of an exhibition which is not perfect, otherwise you have nothing to say for its improvement: "Think of souge imper fections and leave room for the suggested improvement. Apart from these, this topic is very straightforward.
The last question, Question S, is a topic asking for an imaginative and narrative essay. You are asked to explain what happened
during the week that made you change your mind you do not want to possess any longer the power. to know what is in other people's
minds. Logically, what happened to.you must be very unpleasant, otherwise you would nor want the Fairy to take that unique power away from you. However, to think of 'à short story. which gives logical reasons is no casy task.
On the whole, the paper this year is not too easy or too difficult, and is set in a format similar to previous years". What makes a dif
ference is Question 1. It includes an illustrated" map and candidates are required to get the necessary information from it. Candidates were largely psychologically unprepared for this. So complaints abounded. "I don't understand the map. It's something which is not included in the syllabus." "I don't know what the holi day island is is it Cheung Chau?” “It's just junior secondary stuff →→ picture compositions! I've forgotten all about these a long time ago. What I can say here is: the holiday island can be, and in this case probably is, a

or imaginary one, and candidates should not make a fool of themselves by Cheung Chau and what not. This topic. moreover, 1s not something Houtside the Syllabus; just take a look at the syllabus and you will agree. Well, the lemon here is that:: students should read carefully the syllabus, understand what the paper aims at and then set out preparing themselves for every type of composition required. And as one of my friends. has said jokingly, “Anything can happen.in the Cent." So, hope for the best but prepare for the worst...
