Dear Students,
Today we carry on with olûr error analysis.
We shall deal with the remaining five categories. Let's begin our study right away..
6.
Incorrect tense
'I'm not going to discuss in detail rules for each tense, as space is Limited here. I will、discuss, however, comuion errors in the use of tenses so that you can know what to be careful with.
PRESENT TENSES.
(a) Students tend to use the present coii- tinuous tense to denote a habitual action or a state:
Those who are possessing a cas
sette recorder can sit back and enjoy themselves at home.
( Those who possess a cassette:re. corder can sit back and enjoy themselves at home)
* Many people are tending to look down upon illegal imnigrants.. (Many people tend to look down.
upon illegal immigrants.)
(b) Many use would to express a habitual
action: ht
One of the reasons for the popu. lanty of the MTR is that most people would like to try new things.
like should be used instead of
would like.)
(c) Use the progressive form (but not the simple form) in the passive voice when the reference is to the future:
The paper is published in the next
issue of the journal:
(The paper is to be being discussed, in the next issue of the journal:}
ue of the
(d) Note: that the verbs go on and keep (on) have a similar function to the
nornial progressive auxiliary be:
She keeps lon)/goes on doing that
sort of sillyy things.
(e) There are some verbs which are nor- mally not used in the progressive forme
astonish, believe, dislike; feet, far- give, hear, imagine, intend, know, like, love, mean, please, prefer, realize, recognize, remember, see, smell. taste; think, understand, want, wish; belong to, consist of contain, depend. (upjon, equal, have (= possess), include, need, possess, require, seem, tend.--- Some of these verbs, however, are also used with other meanings and then they follow the normal pattern; eg. Tons was smelling (= sniffing) at the newly-found bottle.
PAST TENSES:
There are a. number of common ad- verbs and adverbial phrases denoting past: time, and the simple past tense is used with them::
ago, at that time, in 1970, etc., in the ninteenth century, in the last century. last month/week/ycar, yesterday."
PERFECT TENSES
(a) Below is a list of the adverbs and adverbial phrases which are commonly associated with the present perfect tense:
already, just, lately, not, not yet. since, this month/year/week, today. up to now, up to the present, yet. (b) It cannot be overemphasized that the present perfect tense must not be asso- ciated with an adverb or adverbial expression denoting past time; in these
used
cases the simple past tense must be
*I have had my breakfast two
hours ago.
(I had my breakfast two hours ago. because two hours ago denote a definite time in the past.)
*I have read that book last year. fI read that book last year.
(c) The future perfect tense indicates the completion of an action or event be- fore a particular time in the future. It is always used with a time expression which is often preceded by the pre- position by::
1 shall have finished my project by
the end of this month..
Mary will have been two years at
the school by next week. Remember not to use the future per-1 fect tense in a time clause, in which case use the present perfect tense:
*He will tunted off the radio after
you will have gone
He: will. turned off the radio after
·you have gone (present perfect. used instead of the future per- fect after after).
7. Incorrect voice
When the doer of the action is in- cluded in the sentence, a careful look at the sentence will quite easily bring out any mistake in the voice used,
Problem arises in sentences where the dder of the action is not mentioned; the student: may puzzle whether active Or passive voice should be used.
The temperature increases or The. temperature is increased? The former is used when the temperature is not under
·man's control, ie, it increases by virtue of the changes. in the natural-environment, while the latter is used when, for instance, the temperature of a room is regulated by an air-conditioner. Thus the choicebe- tween active and passive. voice depends on. what is meantim
Note also that intransitive verbs are normally not used in the passive voice, eg. The old woman has fainted and not *The old woman is fainted.
& Incorrect word order
One major problem area. is the dan: gling participles. (A dangling participle: is the part of a verb that becomes granimatically untied from the rest of the sentence.)
Watching a detective serial on my television set, the murdered man lay crumpled on the sidewalk. (From the wording of this senterice, one miglit infer that the mur- dered man was watching the serial as he lay crumpled on the sidewalk. It is of course impos= sible. Write instead
Watching a detective serial on
ny television set, I saw the murdered man lying crum- pled on the sidewalk.) *Reading my favourite book, my
lovely cat sat on my lap. (No matter how fovely one's cat is,
it won't be able to read one's book, I'm afraid. Correct it as follows: 2007
When/as. I was reading my favourite book; my lovely
cat sat on my lap.). While taking a shower, the tele-
phone rang.
(It won't be the telephone, but.
some person, who was under the shower. So you should write While he/shefetc. was taking a shower, the telephone rang)
The following simple rules inay. well. help you avoid dangling participles: (1) The participle must be logically related to the person or thing to which it refers
(ii) The words of the sentence must be arranged in such a way that ̇there. can be no doubt about-the
relationship.
(b) Lookout for the inversion of stibject. and verb. It is one of the main types of errors which students often make. You are advised to turn back to ENGLISH
[87 for my discussion of inversions there::
Disjointed clauses and phrases.
Be careful with what you write: see whether you have wrongly put a full stop after a phuase or clause.
Note the following conjunctions:
as, than; but for, if, provided (that). suppose, supposing, unless; as, be- cause, since, even if, although, how- cver, though; in case, in order that. lest, so that; so that, stich..
that; after, as, as soon as, till/until when, whenever, while,
Whenever, you have included any one of these in your sentence, make sure yoUT sentence is complete, especially for long
ones.
You cannot write, for example,
*However rich he may be. I don't
cure.
Write instead
However rich he may be, I don't care. 10. Unjustified punctuation
(a) Note the punctuatior used in letters; both business and persenal(q.v. ENGLISH [12]10
(b) While a comma carinot connect two complete sentences, a colon or a semicolon cam. This I have brought out in ENGLISH [1].
Remember to put a question mark: after a direct question:
Where are you going to?
but never; put one after an indirect question:
He wants to know where you are.
going to.
