ENGLISH [2]
Stephen Laut (Foundation Press)
Dear Students,
Last week I gave you a number of commonly used expressions and phrases. Do you know what they mean and how to use them by now?
Many of you may think that I'm an infallible expert after you've read the Education Editor's introduction of me Indeed this introduction". applies more rightly to my predecessor, Mr. TC Rebelra, than to me. You are a learner of English, and I am one too: the more you know- the less you feel you have known. So please don't take me as an authoritative linguist. And if you have any comments on this column, do feel free to write me. In this way I can receive valuable feedback so that I can make this column more suitable to your needs in the future.
Today I'm giving you 20 questions on short comprehension. I think it's better for you to exercise yourself in understanding particular sentences before you go on to paragraphs and then passages, i.e., before we go on to discuss Paper III formally. The answers to these ques tions will appear in next week's column. Besides the answers, I'll also add some explanatory notes:
No arbitrary time limit has been set for these questions. But since you want to get an honest appraisal of your comprehension power it would be unfair to yourself to take an un- reasonable length of time. And please don't do. too much guessing.
In each of the following questions, decide which one of the four choices given would most suitably complete the sentence if inserted at the place(s) marked ・
