Stephen Lau (Foundation Press)
Dear Students,
This year I'll discuss with you in this column. how to prepare yourself better for the English papers in the coming Certificate Examination,
I'll touch upon each written paper in English, providing hints, brief notes, examples, exercises, and tests.
Although the different components of the
案我橫豎有空,就陪你走走吧

Examination will mostly be dealt with separ-shed/throw (a new) light on something
ately on different days, there are times when I use a particular sentence or passage to illustrate points concerning these components. Here I give you one example to clarify my point. :
"Don't use a comma to join two complete sentences." This instruction reminds you not to make, a very common mistake in your essays. Thus you may avoid losing many marks in accuracy. Moreover, you can arrive at the correct answer in a couple of seconds just by noting the comma in the following multiple-choice question: Her face
deadly pale, everybody gathered around her to see what had happened.
A. turned
B. had turned
C. turning
Di turn
Answer: C
And you can tackle with ease the follow ing question on transformation of sen- tences:
They are friends of Peter's. Peter treats them well.
(Combine, using no conjunctions) They being friends of his, Peter treats them well.
There has been much deliberation as to what should appear first in this column. Well, at last I decided to present you with some general re marks on commonly used expressions and phrases. Many students may from time to time encounter them in books, newspapers or maga zines, but just take them for granted without knowing what they mean. But when these students are asked to explain, or in multiple- choice exercises, to choose the correct explana- tion to these expressions or phrases, they will be at a loss to know what to say or what to choose..
The following list may well serve as a starting point (and hence it is by no means exhaustive) from which you are asked to build your own suitable list.
