1Give the reasons for the

rapid growth of Hong Kong's external trade, What are the difficulties encountered by Hong Kong in her export of domestic products? Give examples.

Hong Kong is a British colony and is situated at the mouth of the Pearl River, a gateway of China. Reing alsu located at the midway of many sea routes, she handles trade hetween China and the West. Her deep, sheltered harbour together with other facilities egable her to become a major port in the world. The laissez fdire policy (with minimu government intervention) and the low tax here are additional factors for the emergence of Hong Kong as an entrepot trade centre.

Since 1950, attempts in igustrialization were proved the creasful. After the sondrid war, Hong Kong

Lyŕtadtd export her goode to tse foreign countries which We in shortage of consumer

ids. This directly helped

increase the external dmand for Hong Kong products. Later, the embarges against Cina provided the opportunity fat Hong Kong to become a

Urce of Chinese crafts to

United States. On the other dad, the Commonwealth Pference also contributed to

the growth of the domestic arts

of Hong Kong. There marly import-export · firma ing established commercial relations with other countries and foreign firms. Moreover, the presence of developed financial institutions (e.g. banks and insurance companies) s well as excellent transport leommunication, port and warehousing facilities etc.

kewise have helped to increase the domestic exporte.

In recent years, products from Hong Kong have attained sode quality standards. These Lare made possible by the

ported technology, the presence of experienced industrialists, technical tranining facilities and industrial promotion, The products of Hong Kong are fairly cheap because of the relatively cheap Isbour and altempts to raise productivity. Parthermore, trude is promoted by the government and other agencies e.g. Trade Development Council and the Hong Kong Export Credit Insurance Corporation. All of these

and her rapid growth of

Hong Kong also contributed to the growth of imports.

Difficulties encountered by Hong Kong are:

1. Trade barriers, such as tariffs and quotas, are imposed on Pong Kong is bampered.

2. Keen competition comes

from other neighouring or developing countries e.f. Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore, which supply and export cheaper product products.

3. The rising rents, wages

and raw material cast in recent veurà result in the increases in the costs of production for lucal products.

4. The Commonwealth Freference

is cancelled and this has weakened the competitive power of Pong Kong's export exports.

15. Economie fluctuations in

the world, especially in the major markety of Hong Kong, affect adversely the demand for the exports of Wong Kong,

6. The monetary fluctuation in

the world is another problem that adds to the difficulties affecting

17.

Hong Kong's exports.

The present existed training facilities for industries

in Hong Kong are not adequate.

8. Since Hong Kong relies

heavily upon other countries for the supply of raw materials and capital goods, the fluctuations in'import prices means that productien costs are unstable. Hence, to maintain a relatively stable price for exports becomes quite difficult and this will affect the dessand of exports in an unfavourable manner.

19. Hong Kong's exports have

been cuncentrated on a few

few products. markets and a Thug, economic recessions in these countries and decrease in the demand of those products may turo Hong Kong to a dougereus position since Hong Kong is so export-dependent.

10. Because of the lack of

natural resources and the absence of a large domestic market, ong Kong is in a werk burajuing position and often has to accept concer«inng which are unfavourable to ber export positiun.
