ENGLISH (23)

By T.C. Rebeiro (Foundation Press)

Dear Students,

Today I would like to give you some hints on Question Tags. This type of question appears in HKCEE English Language Paper II, that is multiple choice English, almost every year. Question tags are not only important for examination purposes, they are also an im- portant part of the everyday English spoken by native speakers.

Question tags should not be difficult for students who have a fair grasp of the use of verb-farms. However, some farms of question tags are found to be easily confused and mis- used by students learning English as a foreign language. Take for instance the following cases. 1. Everybody was satisfied with the results,

weren't they?

2. Everyone applauded loudly, didn't they?

3. None of the guests arrived punctually,"

did they?

4. None of us took the key, did we?

5. Some of us wanted to postpone the meet-

ing, didn't we?

6. They seldom dine outside, do they?

7. Few pupils got the right answer, did they?

8. Little progress was made, was it?

9. A few pupils scored full marks, didn't

they?

10. A little progress was made, wasn't it?

11. Let's have a game of volley-bail, shall we? 12. He used to be well-behaved, didn't he?
