The following is a list of important history topics that you may be interested in knowing if you are going to sit for the school cert exam. Because the syllabus covers so long a period, and both Europe and Fast Asia too, it is just unavoidable that you put more exphasis on some parts of it, so that conven- tional questions (two only) can be tackled more satis-- factorily. Italy for her failure to be treated as equals by the other Great Powers in 1919, Germany for the humiliating treaty terms imposed on her in the same year. The Fascist and Nazist movements therefore had great attractions to the former soldiers (due to Fascist and Nazist military parades), to the jobless (due to the promise of a better social order), and to the nationalists (due to the promise to revive national glories). Movements as such were unopposed because democracy in Italy and Germany was weak. For national bumiliations and economic sufferings, liberal statesmen were to blame. In Germany it was believed that the army was not militarily defeated by the Allies in 1918 but politically undermined by the German Revolution. In Italy, it was maintained that the Italian soldiers had won the war by
1919, but the diplomats representing Italy at Versailles betrayed their efforts in cowardly submitting to the domination of the Allies.
Ideologically, both Fascism and Nazism were reactions against Bolshevism and Communism. In Italy in 1922 and in Germany in 1935, the people were fearful of the Communist's attack on property. Threatened by ancial disturbances created by the Communists, the people
