What part does speech play in an inter- view? First of all the interviewee has to make the appointment, usually through speech, either in person or over the phone. This call may or may not reach the executive himself; the approach may be through a secretary. In any case, the conversation should be brief, clear, decisive, and definite as to time and place and date. The applicant should ask, in addition,

to the conference which would be of help to the interviewer. An architect might bring plans; a designer, some plates; a service man, his record, a writer, some reprints. In this brief conversation the interviewee should indicate that he has an interest, an intelligent approach, a cooperative spirit, and an assurance of his own worth.

(B).

With the appointment date, time, and place noted and written down where it can be found, the next important step for the job applicant is to make a plan. No applicant should go to a conference or interview without some definite outline in his mind of the material, facts, and background that might be needed. First, he should know all about himself, "Oh," you will say, "I know all about myself; that's easy. Let's go to the next question” But is it so easy? Do you know the exact dates of important phases of your career? On what date were you dis charged from the armed forces? How long did you keep that job with the Atlas Grocery Company? When did you start it was it December or January, and in what year? Just how far did you go in high school or college? And did you take trigonometry or did you stop in the middle of that year and really did not finish "trig"? These may all seem slight and irrelevant questions to ask yourself, because, to you, they seem unimportant. But what is unimportant to you may not be so to the man who is conducting the interview. It is well then to go over your life and straighten out the dates and sequence of events so that you will not have to "hem and haw about details. that should have been clarified before the interview.

(C):

Besides matters of biography and dates, make a plan of what you want an interviewer to know about you. What are the salient facts of your experience which make you a valuable man for a job in this business? What have others. said about you? To whom can you refer the interviewer? Dear Students,

ENGLISH [6].

T.C. Rebeiro.

Today I am giving you a model test paper based on the HKCEE English Language (Syllabus B) Paper III, 1979 My aim is to familiarize you with the types of questions in this Paper. One point of caution: when you attempt such questions, you should read the instructions carefully and make sure you follow them accordingly. For instance, some instructions require you to write your answers in complete sentences, and no marks will be given if you give incomplete sentences; whereas it is always specified whenever you are allowed to answer in a phrase or a single word. Another point you should bear in mind is that you must write your answer in your own words, for it is stated that if you copy, you get zero'.

I will give you the answers to this test paper next week.

PAPER III

(You are advised to spend 1 hour on Part I, 20 minutes on Part II and 25 minutes on Part III)

Part I

Read the following passage carefully, and then: a. List 8 questions in which one can ask onself in preparation for an interview. Each answer should not contain more than SIX words and need not be written in

a complete sentence. Any answer contain- ing more than SIX words will receive NO MARKS.

well of yourself and the business which the interviewer represents. An applicant can add to this list of questions which he can ask himself. in preparation for this interview. He should go to the interview prepared to answer all ques- tions briefly and to the point: He should be able to ask questions in his own right for he, too, has to find out something about the organization, personnel, and wage scale. This is not a one sided affair. The job applicant has rights, and very strong rights, and in his pre- paration he must formulate some of the questions he wants answered.

Part II ~

Answer the following questions which are based on the given passage. Answer questions marked with an asterisk (*) very briefly, using single words or phrases as required. In answering all other questions use complete sentences.

"(a) Find words or phrases in paragraphs (B) and (C) which are similar in meaning to the following:

(i) facking significance (B)

(i) made clear (B)

(lif) prominent (C)

(iv) apt (C)

*(b) What is the other word which is used instead of "interviewee" in the passage?

*(c) How do you call the person to whom you

can refer the interviewer?:

(d) According to the writer should the inter- viewee ask questions during the interview? (e) What is meant by "hem and baw?' in para-

graph (B)?

(f) What is the last suggestion of the writer in

the passage for the interviewee?

Part II

(1) Rewrite these sentences. Keep the meaning of the original sentences as far as possible. Use the words given in brackets or follow the instructions. Make only those changes which are necessary.

Example: As he is poor, he cannot send:

his children to school..
