ANSWERS:
1.(a) Respiration.
(b) (1)The screw clips are:
used to regulate the gas pressure inside the test-tubes. so that the level of the :: coloured-liquid can be set at a definite level at the beginning of the experiment.
(2) The cotton woul is used.

a. With the help of the table
provided, give an explamatory account: of. stream pollution in Hong Kong.
b. What can be done to
minimize stream::
pollution?
Suggested Answer:
Causes of stream.
pollution in Hong Kong
Stream pollution is quite a serious problem in Hong Kong, especially ofthe rivers that flow across or nearby urban
·and Industrial areas, such as in Hong Kong Island, New Kowloon, Tsuen Wan and Tuen Mun. One of the main casues of water-pollution in thuse streams is domestic: water disposal. The used water, which always- contain detergent on human: waste, is returned. to the rivers as sewage Cefflent. This poses a
great problem. Besides. this, streams in those areas are also polluted by industrial waste, especially those from leather making and dyeing in industries. Water used after these industrial: processes contains chemicals which are harmful to living creatures in streams.
Certain rivers in the New Territories are badly polluted, too, e.g, in the agricultural regions of Yuen Long,Tai Po, Fanling, Shatin and Tung Chung. Streams these areas may be
polluted by agricultural
waste. Owing to the use
of chemical fertilizers and insecticides. water after irrigation may contâin chemicals.
Mining: activity is also responsible for water
Cpollution in those outlying
areas. Streams near
mining areas, such as the. Ma On Shan iron mine, are polluted by the waste from the mine.
Finally, streams at or near popular picnic grounds are badly: polluted too, e.g. those at Sai Kung. The problem is mainly caused by the lack of civic"
consciousness of the people in Hong Kong. Many streams are polluted by the people's bad habbits, e.g. throwing: rubbish into them:
Ways to minimize stream pollution
In order to minimize stream pullution, laws of
environmental -conservation should be enforced, Domestic
used water and industrial
wastes, especially those Charmful residual of
chemical industry like mercury, should not be discharged into streams. To tackle with the problem of waste disposal, the government should construct a perfect network of artificial drainages. factories, perhaps, should neutralize the chemical wastes and regulate the rate of discharge. The farmers have the same responsibility, too.
The
Besides, technical treatment of waste matterst should be encouraged, e.go waste matters can be burnt or through other means to make them into fertilizer.
There should also be constant test to assure the quality of the water. Some pollutents in water may be. reduced by mechanical filtering and chemical treatment.
Afterall it is also the duty of every Hong Kong. citizen to clean his: environment and not to throw rubbish into the streams.
10.Y. of the figure below showa
a common featuresof weathering found on Cheung Chau Island, Hong Kong. Name of describe the processes leading to its formation.
Suggested Answers:
Feature Y shows the example of honeycomb weathering or known as tafoni.
It is an example of chemical: weathering, mechanical washing: and erosion. Because of rainfall or humid air, carbon dioxide e (CO) in the atmosphere dissolves and becomes carbonic acis, which may easily dissolve certain minerals in less
such as resistant rock,
granite. In some cases, salt spray falling on the less. resistant rock may dissolve out certain minerals too. Granite is mainly composed of feldspar, "micavand quartz,Within granite, the less resistant mineral; feldspar which dissolves in the acidic or salty water is easily wasted away forning hollows on the rock. The resultant weathered' features are honeycomb structures known as honeycomb weathering.
