The High Island is
chosen to be the second
reservoir in Hong Kong formed
by damming a sea inlet. The choice of such a location is not surprising since it is the only remaining untapped catchment area in Hong Kong.. The catchment area is a large one, too. As shown by the relief, the sea-inlet between the High Island and the main- land has narrow constructions- on both sides, making the construction cost lower as only two short dams are needed to link the island and mainland. Moreover, being located in the f east of Hong Kong, the area
can receive more rainfall and is one of the wettest areas. For human factors, this area is relatively sparsely populated, thus the construction of reservoir, which may probably result in the flooding of land, may cause disturbance to fewer people, which means lower compensation cost.
Effects on the land and people The construction of the reservoir has the effect of inundating existing farmlands and houses. Many villages need to be resettled. Fishermen have to sail for a longer distance since the sea inlet, which was:: originally a water-way, would:: be obstructed. The building of roads, tunnels and pumping stations also affect farming. Much agricultural land will be lost.
