A VOLCANIC LAKE BASIN

If the lava is viscous or if

into a rounded funnel-shaped

hollow which reaches. great depth. In some cases, the hollows are formed by the

subsidence of the collapse or

top, resulting in the cooling contraction of magma. The vent will be finally blocked by solidified lava. In time, water fills the hollow, converting it into a lake called crater lake or caldera lake,

In mountainous areas, snow often collects in the hollows of rocks.

Plucking, a process by which craks and joints are enlarged by freeze and thaw action, takes place, the sides of the hollow are steepened and the base deepened.

The hollow is enlarged into an armchair featu re known as corrie.

After the ice melts, a lake occupies the corrie or

FORMATION OF

A CRATER LAKE (TARN) C

On the floor of U-shaped valleys, elongated hollows may be carved out by the actions of plucking and abrasion of the glaciers, water will occupy these hollows and convert them into lakes termed ribbon lakes. Sometimes, these long and narrow lakes may be a resuit of the deposition of moraines on the floor of the U-shaped valley. They dam up rivers to form lakes.
