A GRANITE

Granite is mainly composed of quartz, which is glassy or white in colour. feldspar (orthoclase), which is white or pink in colour; and biotite, which is black in colour. Granite is a kind of medium grained rock, with crystal s around 1-3 mm in sige.

b. Mode of Formation

Granite is a kind of plutonic igneous rock which is formed d by the solidification of magma when it is cooled. It usually occurs in large masses or batholiths, at a great distance below the aur” face. When the overlying rocka have been eroded, granite exposes on the surface.

Landscapes:

Under the humid and hot climate in Hong Kong, grainte is a kind of weak rock which weathers very easily, so it always forms lowlands or low hill, below 300 M., e.g. the Castle Peak Hills, the range of hills to the north of Kowloon and N. Lantas, Some times, serious erosion ac is on granite and badland is formed. The surface is hare of any vegetation cover, such as in the Castle Peak region

General Changes of Power Supplies İL JAP.

From the graphs, we can see that the total demand for power in Japan increases greatly. The masons are explicit. In recent decades, industrial progress in Japan has been remarkable rapid, this in turn has raised the liv ng standard which contri- butes to the increasing demand. However, the stock of energy vreso rces in the country is in a large measure meagre, so the country has to rely considerably on foreign

Types of Power indicating Decrease in Importance "Although coal is still

the second most important

energy consumed in Japan, the demand of it decreases. Despite the small reserves, the production of coal in Japan is relatively uneconomi cal, because the coal seama

are

thin and faulted. Besides the coal in Japan is generally of poor quality, only a small portion of which can be used for caking and other special- ized purposes,

H.B.P. which had long been an important power supply in Japan, decreases considerably in importance, In recent years, the amount of thermal electric power autruns that of the hydro-electric plants. Japan is quite well endowed with water power but most of the suitable sites had already been tapped before the War, and further development is hindered by the considerable fluctuations of river flowage on account of the seasonal variations in precipitation the shortness of rivers; and the faulted and pervious valley floors. source of power because of the low thermal- capacity and is inconvenient to use.

Types of Power indicating Increase in Importance

The graph apparently

reveals that oil has been playing the most significant role in Japan's power consumpt ion. The consumption in pet- roleum, which is a convenient and latively clean liquid fuel, is speedily on the rise as a subati tution for other forms of fuels, It is greatly used in all types of transport means, electrical applicances aud any types of industrial machinery. By now, oil accounta for about three quarters of

the total energy source in Japan, yet she is able to su ply only a small amount and is of low grade. To meet the increasing demand, every effort in exploi tating new : resources and colaborating with China in extracting, oil from the Pohai and the Yellow Sea is made, 5-super-/6/ tankers are sued which enable the importation of petroleum at a low price.
