Dear Students,
Today we are printing a sample lesson from our new book Effective English Language Usage by EF. O'Neill, H.K. Witman Publishing Co., which is primarily intended for students pre- paring for the H.K.C.E.E. English Syllabus A or B who have already finished Effective English for the New Certificate Course (Paper III Precis and Language Usage) and yet wish to have more practice in the language usage section of Paper III.
In the present book of the set, the author has put most emphasis on testing questions in English language usage which were not included in Effective English, while at the same time" including a certain amount of review material to enable students who have finished Effective English to see how well they have succeeded in mastering the basic principles of usage tested therein.
In both books, the emphasis is on the principles of modern standard English which Hong Kong students find most troublesome. All such points are well covered as are the most common idioms, phrasal verbs, etc, used in English as it is spoken and written today by professional people, businessmen, tourists and all who have been educated in the correct use of the English language. For this reason, students who study Effective English and the present book and who learn how to use the principles contained therein by studying the explanations and examples given in the Tearning Answer Books which accompany both Effective English and Effective English Language Usage will be well prepared for the certificate of Education Examination or other public examinations and will, more impor tantly, be able to use the English language more effectively in their own lives.
