AVOIDING EXPORT TRADE BARRIERS

Packing credit in the form of an advance made against warehouse receipts, showing that the goods are ready for shipment, and against evidence, usually in the form of a letter of credit, that the goods have been ordered by the aventual consignee.
Purchase of shipping documents which include either a full set of bills of lading sultably endorsed or a waybill usually.showing. that the goods have been consigned to a bank. These documents may either be D/P or D/A, to signify that the title to the goods may be given to the buyer either against payment or against acceptance of the liability to pay at a fixed future time.
Negotiation of documents under a letter of credit without recourse to the drawer, (the exporter. in most cases), provided that: the documents exactly match those called for in the letter of credit. In the event that they do not they would then fall Into category e) above.
In addition, banks will assist exporters by fixing rates of exchange so that the exporter can confidently calculate the exact amount in local currency which he will realise upon presentation to the bank of his shipping documents demoniated in a foreign currency. The bank will also arrange collection from overseas of the proceeds of documents which for any reason had not been purchased ́or negotiated under any of the arrangements already mentioned,

Bankers will also arrange for cargoes to be insured and stored after their arrival at the destination and will act as a go-between in cases where negotiations are subsequently necessary. In cases where this does happen it is obviously advantageous if the same bank is present at both ends. It is here that the larger International banks have a distinct advantage over purely local competitors who are forced to solicit the co-operation of correspondents. The Chartered Bank, for example, has long been a specialist in this area of activities. Not only does it have 81 branches in Hongkong to serve the exporter at this end, but also, as a member of the Standard Chartered Bank Group with-over 1,500 offices in 60 countries, it can offer its own facilities, contacts and correspondents in Hongkong's markets all o er the world.
