HISTORY (21)

(1).

Philip Y.L.Woo

(#)

In 1871, Meiji Japan sent a military expedi- tion to Formosa (Tai- wan) in an attempt to speak for the Ryukyu people (some of whom had heen murdered by the Formosans). The motives of the invasion were:

i. to annex both the

Ryukyu island and Tai- wan for Japan's home safety (against foreign imperialism),

il. to try to imitate the

example of Western imperialism, iii. to provide the former samurai class at home a chance to exprese its discontent and militaristic spirito, iv to shift the attention

of the discontented politicians in Japan from domestic problems to overseas adventures.

B. i,ii and iii only.

C. 1,iil and iv only.

D. 11,1ii and iv only. E. i only.

The following were the reasons why Korea was important to Meiji Japan:

1. In strategic terms,

Korea commanded

approaches to Japan t was thus important for Japan's national security, against both Russia in the northwest and Britain in the northeast (through the Canadian Pacific Rail- way controlled by Britain).

ii. In political terms,

Japan's international status and prestige

would be greatly

raised if Korea became a Japanese colony. At

home, demands for a

stronger foreign

policy would be satis- fied.

iii. From the economic view-

point, Korea had rav ́ materials which Japan lacked. Also, Korea would provide Japan many investment oppor- tunities for economic

rowth and a big market for Japanese- manufactured goods.

iv. Traditionally, there

were expansionist ideas in Japan. The Japanese believed that they had both the right and the tradi- tional sanction to expand over Korea.

A. 1,11,1ii and iv.

B. 1,ii and iii only

C. 1,if and iv only.

D. 1,11 and i̟y only. E. ii,iii and iv only.

(3) What were the effects of the 1882 mutiny in Korea?

1. The progressive party

under the leadership. of the queen was restored to power, which thereby quickly announced the decision to modernize the country under Chinese guidance. This increased conflicte between pro-Japanese reformers and pro- Chinese reformers in Korea and paved the way for later Sino- Japanese troubles 1.e. In 1884).

11. The fact that the

queen's party was restored by both China and Japan intro- duced a bad example for later foreign armed intervention in internal Korean politics.

iii. For the sake of pro-.

tecting the. Japanese legation from further damage, Japan as allowed to station 200 soldiers in Korea. From now on, Japan could back her policy in Korea with force. Japanese aggressive- ness was encouraged.

iv. Foreign powers i ce

dissatisfied with

China's dictatorial

manner in dealing with

Korean affairs. The

Ching dynasty was accused of violating Korea's national right. Realizing the weakness of her position in Korea, China took positive steps from 1882 on to strengthen her influence there. Thus loans, modern weapons, troops and advisers were sent to help the Korean court. A. i,ii,ii and iv. B. 1,ii and iii only, 0,1,ili and iv only. D. 1, and iv only. E. iijili and Iv only.

(4) The following were both

the terms of the Shimo- noseki Treaty and the motives of the Japanese in acquiring them. Match the two parts.

the recognition of Korea as an independent nation,

no longer a vassal- state under Chinese guidance that

ii.Formosa, the Pescadores,

and the Liaotung Penin- sula were to be ceded to Japan. iii. Chungking, soochow,

Hangchow and Shashih along the Yangtze were. opened as treaty-norte. iv.an indemnity of some

200 million taels to be given to Japan within a 7-year period.

Japanese had the right to open factories and s set up industries, in China. Goods made by Japan in such a way were free from all Chinese taxes.

vi, the most-favoured-nation

clause and extra. territorial privileges were given to Japan a. to safeguard against foreign imperialism, protect national safety, and satisfy the demands of the Japanese army (which was hungry for territories).

b. to safeguard against

foreign threats as well ao satisfy the demands of the Japanese navy (which was mindful of the danger that Japan being attacked from the sea).

c. to gain British support

for the Shimonoseki Treaty by giving Britain economic bene-

fits, so that Britain would not raise onpos- itions against the other Japanese gains. to cover the large sums of money spent on the

war, to promote industrialization in

Japan,

to exdoit. China's rich resources for Japan's industrial growth.

The following were thé effects of the Triple Intervention in 1895 (when Russia, Germany and France joined to force Japan to give up Liastung and return it to China):

1. Russia a anti-Japanese

act, together with the Russian acquisi-` tion of Liaotung in 1898, deepened Japan- ese hatred and in part led to the Russo- Japanese War in 1904-5. 11. Japan's entry into the

imperialist interna- tional affairs was delayed. After 1895, she remained quiet. and was somehow humbled to take any active part in imperialist politics. iii. The Powers in East

Asia were roughly divided into 2 bloca: France, Russia and Germany (members of the Triple Interven- tion), who wished to benefit from and make use of China's weakness; Britain and Japan, who wished to preserve the existing conditions in China..

from the Triple- intervention men- bere hastened her alliance with Britain. In 1902, the Anglo-Japanese Alliance became fact. China had to pay - an extra 30-million. taels of silver to Japan for the return of Liaotung. The burden of indemnity grew heavier for China. AA
