The granite found at location E experiences the most active chemical weather- ing-
The rate of chemical weathering is determined not only by the resistance of ruck but also by temperatures, amount of rainfall and dis- tribution of rainfall.
Chémical weathering takes place most rapidly in regions of humid climates, with high temperatures, or regions where the rainfall is highly irregular. The high temper- ature (31°C in July), heavy annual rainfall (2,000 fum) with a great concentration in summer (1,600 mm) at location thus favour chemi cal weathering.
The rapid rate of chemi cal weathering at location E is also aided by the non- resistance nature of granite. Amongst the four different types of rocks, granite is the one that is the most. susceptible to chemical weathering, It is relatively less resistant under the above climatic condition.
wing to the high tem peratures and heavy rainfall, chemical process such as
hydration, hydrolysis, car- benation and oxidation take place in the rack. The se are not only on the surface as rain water penetrates well below the surface along joints and cracks. Granite is a kind of well-jointed; coarsed grained crystalline rock composed of mica,
feldspar and quartz. The mica weathers the fastest and in doing so produces iron oxide. The feldspar decomposes slowly, and it combines with water to form fine clay, sometimes known as kaoli Following "lecom position, the resultant elay is washed out and the rock structure is weakened. Cou-
led with this there is a
considerable breakdown of the
resistant silica or quartz.
This can be partly explained
by the periodic rains, foll-
owed by a rapid dessication
of the rock which results from high isolation.
result of the stresses and strains caused by these chemical actions the granite and breaks ́úp.. cays
For location D. although the climatic condition is the same, rhyolite, a kind of
fine grained volcanic rock, is much more resistant than granite:
For location A, despite the non-resisrani nature of shale and the hot summer, the dry condition in that season. does not favour active chemi- cal weathering,
For b. th B and C, tem- peratures are cool, annual rainfall is moderate aud summer rainfall is scanty, such a climatic condition does not favour rapid chemi- cal weathering too.
19. The oilfields in Area A are located in the well dev- eloped industrial region in China. The population of the area is much deuser than Area B and abundant labour. is easily obtained.
oilfields in the area include the Taching, Pohai and Shengli Oilfielda. All' of them enjoy favourable conditions.
The Taching oilfield is situated in kanchuria, close to the important ind- ustrial cities such as lärbin, Changchun, Tsitshishan and. shangyang. The above indus- trial centres produce

lurgical equipment and iron and steels, and thus consume a lot of petroleum to gener- ate electricity. Transport- ation of oils favoured by the dense network of railways which links the oilfielda with refineries and the port. Luta, where oil can be sent by ship or tanker to other parts of the country and for export.
The Pohai and Shengli
are located in the N. Shang- tung Penisula în E. China, They are close to Peking,
Tientsin and Tsinap, which arè major industrial centres. too.
bilfields in area B are not so favourable since they are located in the Na part. of China, which is remo te from the coast and market. The population density of the area is low, and there are only a few scattered indust- rial centres, the local demand is therefore low. Except for Yumen, transportation of oil is difficult since there dre only few railways and limited pipline linkage between oil- fields and refineries.
