1. Use your own words
This does not mean that you should avoid using any wards or expressions that have appeared in the original passage. You just aumarize the passage or the part that is asked for in your own words as far as possible. You can do the following
a. Change the construction
of the sentence,
b. Use different parts of,
speech of the word; Use
another word or expression.
But you should not change the meaning or ideas intend- ed to convey in the origin- al
passage.
If the writer writes in the first person, you have to use the third person. For examples

In the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination, a paper on precis writing will be set, Candidates are expect- ed to sumarise either a part or the whole of the passage given.
The candidate will be given a prose passage of not more than 600 words afld one hour to write a precis not exceed ing 150 words.
PRECIS WRITING: Basic Steps
Before you read the passage, read the instruo tions very carefully. Read the question very carefully. Read every word of it, and read it at least twice,
Read the passage. It is important that you should read it over and over again. There are no hard and fast rules as to how many times you should read the passage since it all depends on the degree of difficulty of the passage,
Put down' all the import- ant points that are need- ed to mit the question. Every point should be relevant to what is asked for.
At this stage, you should also consider the follow- ing pointa's
a. exclude details ‘or
examples;
. exclude negative in-
formation;
exclude irrelevant points. This is in- portant especially when you are asked to give a summary of part
Think of the tenses you should use in your precia Pay attention to your grammar; agreement, plura forms, punctuation etc.
Your precis must be clear and concise. After writing the precis, compare it with the original and see that nothing important been left out.
6. Keep your fair copy clean
and tidy.
7. Your handwriting must be
legible.
Word of Warning
You mist refer to the question (or sometimes the instructions) from time to time since many candidates, under the pressure of time, vrite a precis summarizing the wrong part which is not asked for. Remember that you have only 1 hour's time to finish the precisi you vill not have time to re- write your precis.
In order to make your precis smooth, you should pay attention to the use of conjunctions or linking words. All the points must be linked proper]:
Remember: a precia is not
a list of things.
To A group of F.V. students': 1. Your question will be
ansvered when I deal with Problem Words -
2. Thank you very much for
your support and your let- ter.
