Politically, Britain is our mether: country. Internally, she determines sur governmental system; appeints the cover- nery Chief Justice. and other important. officers of H.K.; approves and disappre- ves bills passed in the Legislative Caun- cil; determines the ways how H.K, should be ruled through the Colonial Regulations and instructions to the Governor. The British Privy Council is our highest court of appeal for both criminal and civil cases. Above all, the Constitution of H.K. is determined by British people.
Externally, Britain is responsible for our defence and foreign affairs. With the withdrawal of British troops from ⠀ Singapore and the winding up of her former colonlee, Hong Kong is a very important military outpost in the Far East. H.K. is both a fuelling station for the British air forces and navy in Asia. All matters concerning our foreign affairs, e.g. neg- otiating a treaty with China, are in the hands of the British Government.
A. Economically, H.K, and Britain bene−. fit each other. Britain is H.K.*s second largest export market in 1974, especially in textile goods. In the vieible trade with Britain, Hong Kong has surplus of HK$173 million in 1973.
Being a British colony and a member of the Commonwealth, Hong Kong enjoys the Commonwealth preferential duties. Our pro-

H.K. is also an indispensable fuel- ling station and stopping place to aira liners of other counstries in the world. Taking advantage of this favourable geogr raphical location of H.K., the British Airways bargains for similar advantage from other contries for embarking and dis- embarking of her passengers.
Our reserve is kept in Britain, either as deposit in the Bank of England, or in-| vesting in the Britiah Government bonds. This reserve helps back up the value of British pound-sterlings in the internation- al money market. In 1973, our reserve represents 12% of the British total forw eign liabilities and 27% of the total gold and foreign exchange reserve. held by the Bank of England.
Finally, our H.K. currency is fully backed up by pound-sterlings. Our banking and commercial systems are based on those of the British.
