What is meant by elasticity of demand and supply? What are the factors that may affect their elast- icity?

The elasticity of demand or su- pply refers to the way in which the demand for or supply of a good rest ponds to changes of price. If a slight change in price causes a gre- ater than proportionate change in the quantity demanded or supply, the demand or supply is said to be elast ic. While a change in price brings a-less than proportionate change in the quantity demanded or supplied, the demand or supply is said to be inelastic.

The responsiveness of demand to
changes or price is affected by a
number of factors:
(1) The availability of close subst-
itutes. Where a commodity has close substitutes within the same price range, the demand for it tends to be elastic. When a commodity has no substitutes: it is more like ly to be inelastic. (2) The degree of necessity.
ally speaking, the demand for nece- ssities is inelastic dspecially when there are no ciose. substitutes for it. Thus, the demand for goods like rice, water tend to be stable regardless of a price change.

veloped a habit in using a certain. commodity, his demand for it would.. be stable and less elastic. (5) Durability. The more durable a commodity, the more inelastic its demand will be.
'' There are also a number of fact ors that may influence the elastici- ty of supply.
(1) Time. In the short-run, since production takes time to adjust, supply is more likely to be inelas- tic. In the long-run, expansion or contraction of output is easier in responding to price changes.
Thus, the supply is more elastic as such.

the more imperfect the market, the more inelestic supply is.
(3) The availability of raw materi—
