(3) Comma is: used to indicate a
pause in a sentence:
My name, dear saint, is hateful to myself,!.
Because it is an enemy to thee. (Romeo and Juliet)
Comma is used to separate a pare- nthetical clause from the remain- der of the sentence:
London can prove itself, as we have no doubt it will, the most beautiful city in the world. Comma is used before and after words the insertion of which may affect the easy flow of a senten-· ce:
In case of fire, if that cannot. be avoided, raise an alarm.
(4) Semicolon is used when two or
more sentences are coagulated. It indicates a pause in the long-
er sentence and has the function

(5) Hyphen is used to form a comm
pound word: washing-machine. It is also used to attach a pre- fix to a root word: co-operation. Students should practise writing with the full-stop sign only. This may help them to minimize the number of errors and ambiguities and, hence,
may help to improve the quality of their writing. To know what a pun- ctuation mark means is trivial but to know how to use one:really well. is not. The following is an example of using full-stops. No other punctuation marks are used:
