The examination will consist of two papers. Paper I will con- sist of a choice of essay-type questions, and will be 11⁄2 hours, while Paper II will consist of a series of short questions and will be 1 hour.

Candidates will be expected to have a knowledge of both economic and public affairs in each Paper. The syllabus as set out below is a general guide to the ground to be covered, and before going into the subject matter of the sylla- bus, it is perhaps fitting and proper to let the candidates know at the outset, that beginning to- day and in subsequent weekly discussions of this column, the general principles involved will be illustrated throughout with examples from Hong Kong.

Basic Economic Ideas

The producer and the consumer: primary, secondary and tertiary producers, their interdependence; stages in the flow of goods to the final consumer, the circular flow of economic activity.

Modem factories, mass product- ion, division of labour, the shift system.

The different kinds of industry found in Hong Kong.

Population.

The census and by-census in Hong Kong, their importance.

Changes of population, birth and death rates, immigration and emigration.
