The human body is covered completely by a protective layer called the skin. The outer layer. of the skin is thin and contains no blood vessels. This layer is known as the epidermis. Below the epidermis is a thick layer, the dermis.

(1) The epidermisi

This is a thin outer layer composed of stratified epithelium. The cells in the deepest layer, the Malpighian layer, multiply and, in growing, push the older cells upward toward to the surface As these move upward, they become flattened. The epidermis is again subdivided into two layers:

(i) The horny layer.

The more superficial cells. of the epidermis, being far removed from the nutrient supply, gradually degenerate as a result in which thei proteins are transformed into a special type, known as keratin. It serves as a protective layer for the delicate underlying tissu from drying, from injury and from the invasion of bacteria.

(ii) The Malpighian laver

ues

It is the deepest layer of the epidermis. The cells in this layer undergoes active division and so produce new living cells constituting a granular layer. As the newly formed cells move upward toward, the surface of the skin, they become flattened and die off, forming the horny layer.

(2) The dermis:

loose connective tissue containing fatty tissue, sweat glands, se-

baceous glands, hair follicles, hair papillae, erector muscles,

blood vessels, nerves and sensory organs.

(i) The hair

It is a hollow rad of dead fibrous, epidermal cell

surrounded by thin hard cuti -cle. The hair develops inside the hair follicle. Each hair follicle is a hollow tube having a papilla -like structure at its

bottom, from which the hair is supplied with nutrients.

(11) The sweat gland

It is distributed in the skin all over the body. Each gland is a duct coiled up into a ball-like struct- ure at its base, lying deep- ly in the dermis, and is supplied with a net-work. capillaries. The secretory. cells of the gland absorb water with some salts, urea and other waste products from the capillaries and pass them to the surface of the skin as sweat.

(iii) The erector muscle

It is attached to the hair follicle. When an animal

is in fright or cold; it enables the hair to stand on end.

(iv) The sebaceous gland

* It usually opens into the hair follicle. It secretes an oily substance called sebum which makes the skin and the hair soft and water proof.

(v) The hair papilla

At the bottom of the hair follicle is the papilla. It is the region where the new thair is grown.

(vi) Blood vessels

They are distributed all over the dermis. They supp ly the skin and hairs with nutrients and remove waste products from the skin. The blood vessels are also to play an important part in the e regulation of the body

emperature.

(vii) The nerve fibres and sensory

organs

* Nerves and their endings are distributed over the dermis. They enable the skin to feel temperature, pressure, pain and other external stimuli

(vii) The fat layer.

It function storage of fat,

- to prevent heat loss and to protect the tissues from mechanical injury.

2. ans.

The general functions of a mammalian skin are: (i) protection.

The cuticle of the skin, being composed hard and resistant cells, forms the protective layer of the body to prevent the under- lying tissues from drying, from injury and from the invasion of bacteria and

cro-organisms.

(11) Sensory

In the dermis are sensory organs and nerves for heat, cold, touch and pain sensat- ions.

(iii) Excretion

The skin is frequently. said to have a minor excret- ory function. The metabolic wastes of the body, such as Water,

carbon dioxide and urea are discharged by skin in the form of sweat.

(iv) Storage

The excess fat is stored in the deeper part of the dermis.

(v) Vitamin D manufacting

It synthesizes vitamin D when it is exposed to the ultra-violet ray.

(vi) Regulrotk

function of the skin and is accomplished by the action of its blood vessels and by the evaporation of sweat.
