Question: uiscuss the underlying causes of the Russo-Japanese Wan 1904.
The Boxer movement1900
caused the expulsion by Peking by the allied army of the 8 powers. Russian troops took the opportunity to occupy Manchuria & refused to withdraw completely (1903) This led to the outbreak: of the Russo-Japanese War in Fel... 1904. But this was only the immed -date cause, or rather an excuse for war.
The underlying causes. were actually the conflict in interest. between Russia & Japan in Manchur la's resources & in expansion in China. Besides tnere was deep- rooted suspicion & hatred between these 2 countries.
won the Meiji Restoration, Japan had risen rapidly from a
backward feudal state to a strong Asian: power, This encouraged an expansion policy at the expense of.the weak China which could. offer a good, convenient supply of raw material & also a big market for Japan's industrialisa -ion. The victory in the: Sind- Japanese War 1895 & the conse- quent gains further encouraged and facilitated a political & economic exploitation of Korea & Manchuria. Above all Yamagata replaced. Ito and he favoured an expansion policy by force.
. However Russia was also very ambitious in China & therefore became the greatest threat to Japanese expansion, Russia's attempt to obtain a port in the Black Sea was checked in the Crimean War. Therefore she tried to expand in east Asia, taking. advantage of China's weakness. In 1860, she obtained the Mari- time Province from China & there- fore had a port Vladivostok to disadvantage. She also

tri but was checked by Britain. In 1875 she gave, the Kurile Island to Japan & received Sakhalin in return. In 1896, Chana allowed Russia to build the Chinese East-

Japan to give the Liaotung. Peninsula back to China & then: Russia Leased Port Arthur & Diren for 25. years from China 1898. Japan was bitterly humiliated : besides: losing dominant control.

Britain was not included in either camp and was isolated. She: therefore needed an ally and besides her traditional Policy was to check hussian expansion.. Thus she oledged an alliance with Japan,in 1902. This Anglo-Chinese: Alliance gave Japan great prestig and deprived Russia of any ally because Cermany & France would not help Russia. to fight Japan: unless they wanted to risk war with Britain. Furthermore, Britan would close the Suez canal to Russia, thus depriving her of a short, convenient supply route. Hence the support from Britain greatly encouraged Japan to fight with Russia.
