Suggest ways to promote tourism in Hong Kong.
Answer.
Tourism has been recognised as the second chief industry in Hong Kong. It brings prosperity to the local economy. Government is aware of this, and different ways can be followed to promo
tourism,
First of all, the
the airport run-
way has to be extended to facilit- ate the landing of jumbo jetliners In fact, the runway has been ex- tended for the use of jumbo jets to land here. Again this is a necessary condition to attract tourists. The Airport facilities must be constantly under review. in order to cope with changes developments of Civil aviation. The jumbo jet liners carry a larger volume of passengers in each flight. This implies that nore passengers will be attracted to Hong Kong if our facilities are sufficient to deal with the landing problem. In the near future, it is expected that a nelt kind of aeroplane will join into the civil aviation cirole. The Lockheed Tristar has had its test flight just recently. If this turns out to be the case, then the runway has to be further ex- tended again.
Not all tourists have relative or friends in Hong Kong. Most of them have to accomodate in hotels. However, there is sufficient. evidence to believe that hotel accomodation for tomists is far from satisfactory. Many tourists. cannot find hotels to stay unless they have reserved the rooms in advance. Otherwise they are forced. to live in some middle class or Even Low-class hotels. These hotels 10 not charge standerdised rental fees. Dishonesty is quite common. This will ruin the repulation of Hong Kong, Construction works of new hotels have been in progress. It is anticipated that this presse. ing problem of shortage of hotels will be lessened.
The Hong Kong Tourists Asso ciation (HKTA) has done much in the
e promotion of tourism. It Y supplies information to foreign countries regarding the various

aspects of local people. Handbooks and pamphlets are published and distributed to tourists arriving at Hong Kong. These handbooks and pamphlets will provide sufficient information to them as from where
they can make purchases. All tourist areas and shopping" centres are listed in the handbook. too. Sometimes HKTA also sponsors the holding of some meaningful festivals. The Ready-to-wear festival was organized and spon→ sored by the HKTA in co-operation with other agencies and organisat- ion. The aim of holding this kind of festival is to attract touriste visiting Hong Kong. Some tourists travel on business. They stay in Hong Kong not for sight-seeing but also for business bargaining. This suggests that the promotion of tourism is closely related to business.
Some tourists uomplained that they are not provided with adequ- ate recreational facilities. They further added that after a few days of shopping and sight-seeing thay feel the need of participat- ing in outdoor sports notably golf
and tennis, This complaint comeș1· from most European tourists. How- ever, their complaint is not with- out reason, In Hong Kong, There are very few golf courses and tennis courts Even for these facilities, they are limited to members only, Tourists hardly have the chance to play there unless thay are accompanied by members. Government should therefore pay attention to it.
Tourists are attracted to Hong Kong for they are interested in the oriental ancient relics. Goverment should try to preserve, ancient relics in New Territories. An alternative way is to establish a tourist centre most preferably in Lantao Island, Casino, race. course and all other attractions are found there. This will facili-. tate the tourists. They make their visits. there and will feel the excitement that can be compared with other leading tourist orient- ated countries..
Lastly, it seems that Hong Kong has lost its fame as a
shopping paradise". This is caused partly by the dishonesty of some merchants and partly by the raising of standard of living. In the former case, if merchants are dishonest by charging higher prices to tourists, this can bring about an adverse effect. These. tourists on retuming to their own countries will spread the bad fame of Hong Kong. Obviously, the loser will be the people in Hong Kong.
In the latter case, Government has the responsibility to see that inflation has to be kept down. |

The following are examples on average, rate of work etc,
Example 1:
man walked for 2 hours at ymp.h. and then for 3 hours at 14 m. p.h. What was his average speed?
Solution: The man travelled 18 miles in the first two hours and 42 miles in the next 3 hours.
In 5 hours he travelled 60 miles.
His average speed = miles per hour
= 12 m.p.h,
should be noted that the average speed is not the average of 9 m.p.h, and 14 n.p.h. becaus the man did not travel at these speeds for equal times. He spent more time in travelling at 14.
a.p.h. than at 9m.p.h. and this raised the average, speed above 9±14 m.p.h. or 111⁄2 m.p.h./
Example 21
A merchant mixed 64 1b of margarine which costed him $0.7 alb with 32 1b of butter which bosted him $1,3 a lb. What was, the cost to him of 1 lb of the mixture?
