Answers to the questions of last week:
(a) The transference of pollen from the anther to the stigma. „IƒA is known as pollination. this takes place within the same flower, as in the pea or bean, it is called self- pollination; if pollen is transferred from the anther of one flower to the stigma of another flower, it is called cross-pollination.
Pollination is the first. step in the fertilization of € flower. Following double fertilization, the ovule becomes a seed. . The fertilizea egg undergoes numerous divisions to form an embryo. At the same time, the fertilized endosperm nucleus divides to. form many large cells in which food is stored for use by the embryo later on, when the see germinates. The outer cells. of the ovule surrounding the embryo sac become the covering layer of the seed or testa

Broad Bean Seed
The parts of a seed can pe seen by studying a large seed, such as the broad bean It should first be soaked in water for several hours. On the outside of the testa, along the narrow end of t seed, a scar, or hilum, 19 easily seen; it shows the point of attachment of the seca to the pod. Near it, the tiny. opening is the micropyle. If the bean is split open, it can be seen to have two large cotyledons, each of which containe stored food. The remaining part of the embryo contains the epicotyl and its tiny plumiles, which make up the upper part of stem and Leaves of the plant, and the hypocotyle and the radicle, which will develops into the Lower part of the stem and the roots respectively.
It
(a) During the germination or a seed the cotyledons come above the soil level and develop into the first foliage leaves. is known as epigeal germination. e.g. the seed of castor oi. plant. In the hypogeal germination the cotyledons remain under the soil level. and gradually give up their stored food for the development of the plumile and radicle. e. the seed of broad: hean

In A French Bean Seed
On germination the radicle which first emergės downwards, and then the hypocotyle straightens and lifts seed out of soil level, The testa of the seed drops. off and endosperm can be
on outside of the two cotyledons. Enzymes from thi cotyledona digest the endo- sperm into soluble substances. which are passed to the developing shoot and root. When the endosperm is all used the cotyledons open out and form the first pair of foliage. leaves
(c): The cotyledons, after exposure at the surface of the soil, grow apart and develop chlorophyll. When the storea food in them is consumed completely they are able to make food for the growing seedling by photosynthesis for a certain period of time.
Simultaneously they also can secrete enzymes to change insoluble food into soluble food which is then absorbed by the plumule and radicle.
They also act as protective coats for the young plumule which lie between them at the seed stage and during the early stage of germination

in Paper 3.Read the passage. then answer all questions.
Traffic problems are causing serious concern in Hong Kong. The tremendous growth of population in recent years places a heavy burden on public transport services. The rise in the standard of living enables more e and more people to own cars. The number of vehicles of all types is far too great for the Small mileage of roads, Many of these are narrow and winding and are unsuitable for the speed and volume of present day traffic. To make matters worse, carless pedestrians often wander off the pavement and add to the dangers. of the road
Many attempts have been made to solve these problems. The widening of roads, the straightening of dangerous comers, the construction of new carriage-ways and fly-overs for cars and of subways for pedestrians, áll help a great deal. But more imaginative plans are called for. Traffic must be considered in town planning. Since cars are here to stay, they must be used safely and beneficially. With this in mind, a group of town planners, architects and engineers who have studied traffic problems overseas have suggested building the reclaimed area in the Central District in three layers.
Traffic would circulated at the ground level, pedestrians would be free to go safely about their business or pleasure at the higher level and the third business or pleasure at the higher level and the third level would be used for car parks. This may well serve as a model for the planning of new towns..

Candidates go into Translation. are required to translate one passage in English into Chinese and one passage in Chinese into English. The following is a typical passage in English to be translated into Chinese
The orange is a very common fruit and in my opinion the best It has a delightful, sweet taste which I am very fond of. It is good for the health. It is safe to eat because it is peeled before it is eaten. It is round and young children can use it for a ball and can flick the pips at thei enemies. Moreover, its honesty. appeals to all of us. If it is going to be bad for the best of us are bad sometimes - it begins to be bad from the outside. On the other hand the pear often looks fresh but it is rotten inside.
