The scientific study. of the sub ject of heat began with Galileo (1564-1642)and his followers in Italy constructed the first therm mometer. At the middle of the 17th century, the caloric theory was very popular. According to the theory, heat was a subtle fluid which flowed from hot bodies to cold bodies. Thus the production cof heat by rubbing was explained as a process of "squeezing: caloric from the pores of a substance. But the theory failed to explain many simple observations and following the development of atomic theory in the field of chemistry, physic- iate also came to believe that heat could be explained in terms of the motion of minute particles in the substance. The success of kinetic theory has led to the believe that heat is one form of energy which is associated with the random motion of particles in the substance. and is called the: thermal energy. It was found. experimentally and theorectically that, the greater the thermal energy, the greater is the degree of hatness of the body, The latter is now given the name--the tem- perature of the body. 2.Thermometry.
2.1. Scales of temperature.
As a substance becomes hotter, its particles vibrate or travel about more quickly & consequently the substance, shows changes in ats properties. One of the most obvious of these effecte is the thermal expansion and this pheno- mehon had been used to indicate temperature changes. To render cbservations: quantitative and re- producible, a decision must be made about the scale of the ten- perature. The basic principle is to define 2 fixed points; the range between these being called the fundamental interval and to specify a procedure for subdivid ing the fundamental interval into its degrees. The fixed points are the ice-point and the steam-point,
