Question: Account for the Failure) of the Taiping Rebellion.
The Taiping Rebellion broke out in 1851 & founded the Heavenly, Kingdom of Great Peace with Nanking> as the Capital(1853), However by: June 1864, it was completed defeat 1 wed by the forces of Tsang Kuo-fan, Li Hung-chang & Tso Tsung-lang. There were many' reasons, for its (failure. Thus some historians think
that its final defeat was inevit able.
The most obvious reason for failure is the lack of leadership. Hung. Hsiu-chuan entusted his: friends & relatives to be officers. However most of these were incap- adle. Secondly, there was intermal dispute and the leaders actually killed one another. (e.g. Hung Hsiu-chuan xilled Yang Hsiu-ching: & Wei Chang-Hiu,): Thus there were Tever & fewer good Leaders. Thirdly Hung was not setting a good example for his followers. He actually re- tired to a life of luxury & seclu-
sion, This led to great discontent because on the other hand his fol lowers had to obey very strict moral rules.
Another important reason for failure is the lack of support of the people. The land owners were frightened by Hung's communist idea of Land reform c confiscation::of private owmership, The scholar & The peasants too were * provoked -cause the Falpings were against. their traditional religion (1.3. Budhism), customs (eng. ancestral worship & Pung-shui") Besides these people could not understand the dialect of the. Tajrings because they inostly came from the south. There was also traditional dislike} | with the people from the southern |provinces considered as "Barbarianyii
At the same time, some Taipings, also lost faith because most Tai- *pings themselves found the moral
rules too strict & wanted to return: to the old way of life. Some at first were very excited about the new theocratic (religions) & com- munist (edcial equality) ideal. But the leaders then were not set-) ting a good example in moral life: Above all Hung did not keep his promise concerning the granting or Land. Thus the Taipings began to suspect the real aim of their lead Herst

Besides, the military superin: ority: of the Ching & her supporters was a decisive factor, Under Tseng Kuo-fan there was Army Reorganisat. Jion(e.g. with 5,000 new ware juries built). and his Hunan forces finally defeated: the 'Taipings, Be- aides. The Ever Victorious Army, with superior organisation & armst under foreign financial support & the control of Li Hung-chang, help Fed a lot. Apart from all these, the Taipings lacked an overall.. civil administration, such as civil examinations & other well-planned. mechanisms of govt. Most leaders were inexperienced in administrat- ion & stressed mainly military" success,
Furthermore, the Taipings Lacked a good military strategy. For instance after they had captur -ed Withan, a strategic point with excellant communication, they only ldpted the city & then left. The place was later used by Tseng to organise & train his army and fron there to counter attack the Tai: ipines.
