Study this passage and answer the questions which follow it.

There has been a lot of heated discussion on how best to train urgently needed skilled workers for Hongkong's manu“ facturing industries. The contestante are the contestants are the Government and industrialists. The latter have seemingly sat back, idly hoping that official action would to taken. While repeatedly. reminding the rest of the community of the importance of training skilled craftsmen, many Industrial leaders have acted as though it

practical, trang At the heart of the controversy is the question of craftsmen. This form of vocational training prepares trainess. for employment under five main classifications: commercial, in- dustrial, services, agriculture and aurine. It is widely accepted that the best method of training craftsmen Is apprenticeship scheme which has a balance of both theoretical and practical training. Unfortunately, industrial leaders do not acen to appreciate this distinction and they think and suggest that both theoretical. and practical industrial training should beprovided from publie funds. More recently, the Government has made it clear that it would take

ake charge of the theoretical part of the training in the form

of institutional courses only. On apprenticeships "the respon aibility for practical training rests squarely on the shoulders of Industry",. said the Commissioner of Labour. The Government has now started to implement its own proposals along these lince and the first Technical Institute will provide craftaman, training courses: at Morrison Hill.

GEOGRAPHY

PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY LESSON TWENTY-EIGHT

The Cross Profile of a River (Continued) The Lower Course (Plain Course)

8th May, 1971.

AT the lower course, water volume is great but the flow is slow due to little gradient. There are not much tributaries but the main river only. Down cutting es entirely replaced by side cutting and deposition. Because of side outting, the valley floor is very open and spurs along river valley retreat backwards along the river course. The river channel is entirely made up of aluvium, and the flow of river. is free (to any direction), so the course of river will be changed all the time, Free development of loops called meanders occurs.

Flood Plain - The material transported by river will be

deposited because river energy is entirely reduced by low gradient. Therefore, deposition along the flow building up a big layer of fine sediments.

(1) On account of retreating spurs, river meandering widens

the valley.

(ii)Aggradation goes an upon the floor. Thus laver by laver

alluvium is deposited.

(111)More deposits are found along the river banks and a

built up levee is formed,

'Uxbow Lake (Mortlake) cut-off lake

Braided. Strcan - It is formed after flooding, the floor is

supplied with extra material. Thus the floor" is higher, when the floor subsides a stream is divided into several streams before joining into one.

Estuary & delta

If there is no delta at the estuary of a river, the reason may be

(1) low amount of silt transported by the river, (11) Strong current at the river mouth,

ruption of River Valleys development Interruption owing to drought

gorge is formed when river down cutting and side cutting along the river course, but no weathering and erosion to widen the valley.

ruption oving to structüre:

if river flows in alternate beds of hard and soft rock, river terrace is formed in x-section, River widening more effective in soft rock than in hard rock. Therefore. valdey uider in soft beds but narrower in hard-beds.

(C) Interruption due to rejuvenation

Re-establishment of youthful stage from a mature stage of landform, The rejuvenation takes place when change of sea level..

Upstream side of hard rock. The softer rock receives excessive crosion as river changes agradient at the hard out crop anti, a laku, above the fall,is thus formed,

Knick paints and Terraces

As the down cutting is renees, river flows on its former flood plain leaving a line of terrace along the valley. side. The marked break of slope is known as knick point or rejuvenation head. It is sometimes marked by rapide or even waterfall.

In cases of several uplift there will be several tero terraces and knick points all of them wigile up-biêzmy

Gorge

The formation of gorge is when the uplifting movement is balanced by the rate of river down-cutting due to rejuvenation, so there is no change in the level of river course except the river sides which is uplifted, forming a gorge.

Hanging Valley

The down cutting is less effective when compare with the main stream when the main stream can retain its level when land uplifted. The tributaries have not much power to down cut their beds, so they join to the main river in a high lever. So there are hanging valleys.

Incised Meander

As the land is uplifted, the meander course remains the same, since the uplifted land is balanced by the down cutting rate of the river, so the contours are very close to each other.

(In normal case the sides of the river meander are flat, but the sides of the incised meander are high)
