EXERCISE 13

Study this passage and answer the question which follow it.

Asia's first world exposition in Japan will be attracting vast crowds to the city of Osaka following its opening on March 15, 1970. The Osaka exposition is expected to be the world's largest ever in terms of foreign participants. Japanese officials say that at least 70 and probably more nations will be represented. The site for Expo 70, about 10 miles from the centre of Osaka, is a hive of activity. Men and machines are hacking away at the earth around the hills which, until 1967, was a mass of bamboo scrub, The steel sketetons of several towers are already up.

The Osaka Fair will boast several improvements over the world exposition held in Montreal in Canada in 1967. For one thing, there will be better communications. Two miles of moving roads, built into air-conditioned transparent tubes running from 15 to 22 feet above the ground, will link five main entrances. One of the complaints at Montreal was that the theme pavilions which many visitors felt were the most interesting - were located too far apart. At Osaka, the theme. or symbol area will stretch for 900 yards across the centre of the site, and will be partly covered by the world's largest transparent roof - almost 900 feet long and 325 feet wide.

The Japanese, today enjoying the most amazıng economic boot in their history, have adopted, as their theme for Expo 70, progress and harmony for mankind''. The pivot of the symbol area will be three towers-tower of the sun, tower of motherhood and tower of youth; A pedestrian con- veyor belt and spiral escalator will take visitors past exhibits depicting man's prehistoric existence, his acquí- sition of wisdom, life in the today and speculation on things, to come

The steel frame of the symbol area's vast roof is alеauy finished, but is still resting on the concrete floor. Eventual the entire structure will be jacked up 90 feet above ground level. Hongkong's unusual pavilion, with its giant sails, has not yet taken shape but work on its foundations has begun.

The first pavilion to be completed will be Canada's Palace of Mirrors, a unique structure of 50,000 square fee.. One of the project officers for the pavilion says construc- tion of the main building should be finished shortly, Canada has been in the lead ever since Osaka was accepted as the site for Asia's first world exposition in May 1966. In October that year, Canada was the first foreign country to accept Japan's invitation to attend and was the first nation to break gound for its pavilion. No other foreign: government is spending as much money in its Expo 70 efforts as Canada Canada's participation will cost almost $19 million. Only the Japanese Government 15 spending more on its huge pavilion in the shape. of a flower with five round petals.⠀⠀⠀

The Canadian structure is a flat-topped pyramig coverea with mirrors. Entrances are cut into the four corners. The mirrored walls create the Illusion of multiplying the space of the pavilion, and visitors will see their reflections many hundreds of times. The Soviet Union. is putting up a steel building of striking beauty. The semi-circular pavilion rises to 330 feet at its highest point. Part of the Soviet exhibit will honour Vladimir Lenin, because 1970 marks thecentenary of his birth, France is housing its exhibits in four giant plastic dones, de- signed to keep their shape through internal air pressure.. A pavilion will have as its roof a balloon with a diameter of eighty-two feet. On fine days, the balloon will be allowe to soar 250 feet and will change its colour according to the time of day. On September 13 next year, the closing day of the Osaka Fair, the balloon will be released. Japan. hopes that by early next year the United States will have landed a team of astronauts on the moon, and will have among its exhibits a genuine moon rocket.

ong its exhibits a ge

The Osaka site does not have the natural charm of Montreal's setting on two islands in the St. Lawrence.. But it has other advantages. The site is saucer-shaped, thus giving from certain points a superb view of the entire exposition, Access to the site will be easier than it was at Expo 67 and a new railway and specially-built motor ex- presswat will pass through, the centre of the fair grounds. Work on major transport projects is well under way. Several huge parking areas already have been completed, and Expo 70 officials claim it should take visitors only 20 minutes to reach the site by rail from the centre of Osaka or a little longer if they travel by car car

....

Two problems are worrying Japanese officials: the numbers of visits to be made to the exposition and the availability of accommodation. The director of the Osaka exhibition's information department says the official

timate is about 30 million visits. But recent survey

shows

institute

there may be as many as 67 million. The says that about 23.6 million people will visit the fair grounds, but that many will go twice, three times and pei haps more often. In Osaka and other nearby cities there are now 6,000 Western-style hotel rooms, Another 4,000 will be added before the opening. According to research by the travel industry and government bodies, about 500,000 foreigners may visit the fair, each of them perhaps twice. The Japanese Government had requested hotels in the area to reserve 70% of their rooms for ioreign visitors. With Japan having a population of 100 million, most visitors will be Japanese, However, hotel prices are very high, particularly for local Japanese people, and many locals will try to find cheaper accommodation.

Another less significant, solution lies in Osaka's pro- ximity to other large cities, Osaka itself is an industrial, grant with a population of seven million living in and around the city. It is well served by expressways which slice] through the tall office buildings in central areas. Nearby are Kyoto, the capital of Japan for more than 1,000 years, Nara, a small city famous for its 53-foot Buddha and the.. large seaport of Kobe. Expo officials say that tourists who want to stay in Kyoto, with its lofty temples and shrines. and tranquil gardens, will find it easy to commute to the Osaka site by rail, bus and car.
