Social scene
Economic condition Conclusion.
At the beginning of the nineteenth century Ching seemed to enjoy an everlasting peace áng” serenity as her influence was felt in the whole of Asia and the European powers were forbidden to enter China. Up to then, Ching had never been defeated by a foreign power. She had a continuous civilisation. of over three thousand years. The strength of the government made consolidated by Kang Hai and Chien Lung was still very formidable. But Ching China had passed the peak of its power by 18001 She was on decline and the coming century witnessed every signa of the last stage of China's dynastic cycle; internal rebellions and unrest, floods and famines, repeatedly defeated by foreign powers and, finally, revolution.
Emperor Chia Ching succeeded Chien Lung in 1796 and he found that the power of the Ch'ing government was teakening. The vigour and morals which were usually seen in the earlier emperora could never been found in Emperor Chia Ching or his successors, Ae usual, with a mediocore ruler on the Chinese throne the authority of the central government began to be challenged local high officials either carried out imperial instructions half-heartedly or did not obey orders, But this trend was not yet apparent because the prestige of the Ching was still high and the mandate of heaven was still held in the hands of the. Manchus. Corruption and bribery was not unusual in
a rare virtue amongst the officials especially those of lower rank. Administration began to disintegrate as there was no innovation introduced to replace obsolete administra- tive devices. If all these were not checked, the result would be one of confusion and chaos.

However I there was one particular thing in th political soene: the rise of the status of Chinese officials. This rise was made possible by 1800 as most of the Manchu officials were incapable due to limited education, or laziness. The appointment of Chinese officials to high posts had far-reaching. consequences,
The social conditions of the Chinese at the begiming of the nineteenth century remained unchanged. Local gentry were still the most powerful class in the country. Merchants were still dispised. The literati was looked upon with respect. Intermarriage between the Chinese and the Marchus was. forbidden. But social unrest was becoming more and, nore frequent as time went on, for flood and famine were becoming numerous since local administration was not efficient. This social unrest was later developed into a large-scale uprising. This happenaa in middle of the century and it was termed as the Taiping Rebellion. Moreover, a new disturbing factor- was introduced into the already confusing social Beene: the coming of the missionaries supported by gunboats and diplomats. The peasants were irritated by most of the practices of the missionaries. Superstition and ignorance which were common of the Chinese peasants made the conflict between the missionaries and the peasants inevitable. This hostility towards the missionaries and their Chine et, converts was erupted in the Boxer Uprising of 1900.
By 1800, the economic conditions of China were far from satisfaction. Dependent wholly on agriculture, China's economy was unstable as many natural disasters such as flood or drought had not yet had any solution. The wat had offered many changes of trade and commerce to China, but all were refused. Having been refused, the west hit upon one solution which could balance their deficit: the importation of opium to China, The annual sum used to buy opium was tremendous; as a result, Chinees economy suffered greatly. Moreover, the habit of opiun-smoking of the Chinese presented many difficult problems to both China's economy and society.
There was great improvement in the technique of agriculture, but as the increase of population was so rapid that the increase in production could not be gorportional to the population increase. In consequence, poverty was common in most of the Chinese villages. The livlihood of the peasants was made more difficult by the heavy taxation.
China's economy was poor and this gave rise to many problems which the government was unable to solve. Thus Ching China was in decline, fa
The boginning of the nineteenth century saw in Chisa every sign of decline. The authority and prestige of the central government was waning, social unrest was frequent and the economy was being undermined by the importation of opium. All these factors made the fall of the Ch'ing dynasty inevitable.
