(E) PUNCTUATION (Continued)
(a)
The Semi-colon
The Semi-colon is used
to separate co-ordinate sentences when a con-> Junction is not used, e.g.
Your appearance pleased my friend;
delighted me; I have watched your behaviour
in strange. circumstances; I have studied how
you played and how you bore your losses; lastly,
I have put you to the test of a staggering announce-
ment, and you received it like an invitation - dinner.

(b) To separate the clauses of a Compound sentence
which is joined by a word such as therefore,
however, nevertheless, besides, also, otherwise,
and so. It is because these words join sentences
but are stronger than conjunctions like 'and'; and
so need a stronger punctuation mark
e.g. You must work harder; otherwise you
will fail in the coming examination.
Question Mark
A question mark is used after a direct question. e.g. I asked him, "When will you come back?
The Exclamation Mark
The Exclamation Mark is used after an interjection,
an exclamatory sentence or an expression of great
feeling or wish.
e.g.
Alas! We have lost the match.
"Hello! How. nice to see you herea"
"There goes our car!"
"What a terrible accident it was!"
"What a wonderful play it was!**
The Dasn
The dash is used:
(a) to indicate an afterthough
an emendation.
e.g. I spoke to Jean - you know, my
neighbour and told her what you said.
(b) to indicate an unexpected turn in a sentence.
